West Virginia is a gorgeous state with rolling green hills and deep valleys marking the Allegheny Mountain region. It also contains a ruggedly rocky region of the Appalachian Plateau Province and breathtaking Blue Ridge Province. Moreover, the state is comprised almost entirely of mountains, giving it the apt nickname the Mountain State. The state motto is “Montani Semper Liberi,” meaning “Mountaineers are always free.”

Although West Virginia is known for its unique Appalachian culture, it is also home to some bigger cities. Travelers to the state can find charming attractions and urban amenities alongside the striking mountain views. In this article, we look closely at the state to discover its largest city now and in 2050.

Nature lovers flock to Charleston because of the abundant outdoor opportunities it offers. Surrounded by striking natural vistas, the extensive network of trails gives hikers, bicyclists, and horseback riders endless possibilities. The Kanawha State Forest includes 9,300 acres of wildlife and beautiful scenery.

In addition to its spectacular natural beauty, Charleston provides historical charm. A key historical attraction is the West Virginia State Capitol, built in 1863. It was moved from its original location in Wheeling to Charleston in 1870, back to Wheeling in 1875, and finally back to Charleston in 1885 where it remains. The East End District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is yet another part of the city’s allure.

Over half of West Virginia’s residents live in rural areas, making it the third most rural state in the country. Therefore, with the migration from more urban areas into smaller, rural areas, the state has opportunities for growth. As it stands, though, most of its cities are seeing declining population growth rates.

Charleston and the second-largest city, Huntington, have similar populations. However, the annual population growth rate is greater in Charleston, creating a larger population decline at a faster rate. Experts predict Charleston’s population will be 42.9 thousand by 2029, while Huntington’s will likely be 42.3 thousand. Twenty years later, Huntington’s population will be larger than Charleston’s, making it the predicted largest city in West Virginia by 2050.
