The largest house in Georgia is located in Fayetteville, which is just south of Atlanta. The city has a population of around 20,000 residents, making it a smaller suburb of the greater Atlanta area.

History of Fayetteville

Founded in 1822, the Fayetteville economy largely relied on slave labor for the first few decades of its township. The majority of the area was filled with cotton plantations where greedy owners forced other humans to work under strenuous conditions. However, the arrival of new agricultural technology and the Union’s victory in the Civil War brought change to the area. Although slavery was no longer present in Fayetteville, racism ran rampant. As soon as the Civil War ended, the Ku Klux Klan gained popularity in the area. This terrorist group remained prominent until the 1920s and then was not heard from again.

With the Great Depression and the removal of the town’s railroad, Fayetteville struggled significantly until the 1980s. Because the main industry at the time was agriculture, countless droughts choked the economy and dwindled the population. However, Fayetteville began to grow again when people moved there to take advantage of manufacturing opportunities and have proximity to Atlanta. Now, Fayetteville is a vibrant suburb full of job opportunities and diversity that will continue to grow throughout the 21st century.
