The Monroe House: History

Completed between 1963 and 1964 as an 11,000-square-foot home by J. Edgar Monroe, Charles Ramsey expanded the largest house in Mississippi to 25,000 square feet after purchasing the home in 1993. The monumental house was located in the historic district of Pass Christian. It had 15 bedrooms, six fireplaces, and between 11 and 19 bathrooms (depending on the source). The house and lot encompassed nearly eight acres of beachfront property and boasted 400 feet of beach view looking out over the Gulf of Mexico. According to the Pass Christian Historical Society, its name is the Monroe House. Despite this, some people still refer to it as Ramsey Mansion.

The Monroe House’s original design drew inspiration from Mr. Monroe’s residence in Rhode Island, the Rosecliff Mansion. Rosecliff gained fame through its appearance in the 1974 film adaptation of The Great Gatsby.

The highest listing price we came across for Mississippi’s largest house was $15 million in 2011, but the listing disappeared after a year. The house later hit the market with a price tag of $6.5 million in July 2018, but that listing didn’t last long either.

The Monroe House: Destruction

Unfortunately, on August 5th, 2019, lightning struck the largest house in Mississippi. The fire that ensued burned for 12 hours while firefighters desperately tried to put it out. The once glorious home was reduced to rubble. As of February 2023, the empty lot sits for sale at $4.5 million.

While Monroe House claimed the title of the largest house in Mississippi in recent history, Windsor Plantation held the crown in the late 1800s. Built between 1859 and 1861, this plantation house featured five stories with 23 bedrooms. The cost of building the home was estimated to be over $4 million in today’s money. The plantation house was destroyed in 1890 by a fire. It was one of the largest plantations in Mississippi.

Now called simply the Windsor Ruins, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (MDAH) created a project to preserve the area. There are no amenities on site, and access to the area is often cut off by flooding. However, visitors are encouraged to take and share pictures of the magnificent site. Windsor Ruins is on the National Register of Historic Places and is also listed as a Mississippi Landmark.

Although the largest house in Mississippi is huge, it doesn’t compare to the largest house in the United States. Biltmore Estate encompasses 8,000 acres and a 175,000-square-foot home in Asheville, North Carolina. The estate was completed in 1895 with 250 rooms! The incredible estate now hosts visitors from all over the world. Some locals even have their wedding at the estate. Activities include carriage rides, self-guided hikes, and shooting lessons. Perhaps most exciting is the opportunity to work with the hunting falcons on site.

Final Thoughts

All the homes we’ve mentioned are exquisitely beautiful. They each inspire awe through their history and stunning appearances. Even the ruins of Windsor give viewers feelings of wonder. The architecture and design of each show the impressive skill of those who designed them.

Would you want to live in one of these marvelously huge homes? Just think – what it would take to clean such a place? You might change your mind with that astounding amount of work hanging over your head!
