It is common practice for lion prides to hunt together. The lionesses will take the lead and be the pack hunters who will feed everyone. However, sometimes, a lion finds themselves in a lucky situation where prey walks right by. It is almost like a walking buffet that is too good to pass up. Let’s see this lone lioness see a walking buffet she cannot pass up.

Lioness and Zebra Sighting in Africa

The YouTube video posted at the top of this blog post takes us to the wide-open plains of Africa. The Incredible Wild Animals Sighting Channel caught sight of this video and shared it with their followers of over 230,000 subscribers. They also commonly share videos daily of animals such as lions, elephants, hippos, giraffes, and buffaloes

Lioness Hunting On Her Own

At the start of this video shown above, a safari tour has stopped as they have captured the sight of a lioness prowling around in search of food to catch. Suddenly, like a dream come true, four zebras cross her path without a care because they don’t know that danger is near.

This lioness does not rush. Notice how she crawls only a few feet and then lies in the grass. She will remain patient to get what she needs. The Scientific American adds, “The history and behavior of man-eating big cats is truly fascinating stuff; the stealth, cunning and occasional reckless confidence they display in getting at their victims…”

The lioness uses this opportunity to inch forward at 15 seconds as the zebras turn their backs. She waits as the zebra on the furthest end raises his head and looks around. However, once this zebra bends down to eat the grass beneath his hooves, this is the perfect moment for this lioness to strike.

She takes off, running. Now, she does not wanting to capture all four, she is trying her best to cut one off from the herd. By the end of the video, she had finally captured one and now had the difficult job of killing it alone.

How Many Zebras Live in Africa?

Zebras (Equus quagga) of the genus Equus are found solely in Africa. According to the latest study in 2016 that was updated in 2023 by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, there are estimated to be over 500,000 zebra left in their population.

The zebra is a much-desired animal in the way of predators who hunt them. They must worry about well-respected predators such as lions, Nile crocodiles, and cheetahs. They must also watch out for hyenas, wild dogs, and leopards. As we can see from the video posted at the top, even though this lioness didn’t have her pride, she wasn’t about to let this delicious spread pass her by without taking a bite.
