The hunt can be a vicious activity for wolves. Wolves hunt together in packs. This is the way they can hunt and chase down their prey smartly. Typically, prey that is much larger than they are. We can see here from the video below that in the face of dozens of massive animals, these wolves took their time to pick one out.

Pack of Wolves Sighting in Yellowstone National Park

Wolves can run up to 46 miles per hour.

The next YouTube video shown at the bottom of this blog post takes place in Yellowstone National Park located in Wyoming and also spans the state of Idaho and Montana. This video was filmed and uploaded by the Yellowstone Twins. This channel is run by two twin sisters who are dedicated to posting videos that they take of various animals. They share their description of what happened in the video below.

“…There were two black wolves and two grey wolves that made many attempts to separate and snatch a baby bison from the herd…The Bison herd would surround the babies and chase the wolves off. It was interesting to see how close the wolves got to the Bison before they reacted. The Bison also did not seem to be very afraid or bothered by the wolves’ presence.  The wolves were almost successful on the first attempt but one of the grey wolves did not circle the correct way so the baby bison was able to get back to the herd and be protected by the adults.”

Pack of Wolves Vs. Huge Bison

At the start of this video posted at the bottom, we see a herd of dozens of enormous bison that are roaming in the Yellowstone National Park. We see a small pack of wolves casually stroll into this herd. They are looking for a bison to hunt.

As animal hunting goes, they know that they cannot just go in all willy-nilly, for lack of a better phrase. They have to very smartly work together as a pack to determine which of these bison would be the best to cut off from the herd and attack.

Something to take away from this long video is that these bison were not scared of these wolves roaming around. Perhaps it is because of their large size and how small the wolves are in comparison.

Is It Normal Behavior for Wolves to Be Near Bison?

Two Bison In Sheridan Wyoming

Bison are scared of wolves and will usually avoid them.

Elk and bison are wary of both wolves and bears, as both predators will attack and consume them if given the chance. Wolves have acquired the skill to hunt bison successfully, especially in areas where elk are not abundant.

Wolves are familiar with hunting bison and will do so more frequently, particularly in the spring. The findings from this study highlight the remarkable adaptability of wolves when it comes to targeting new prey species.
