It breaks our hearts to hear of animals being abandoned. There are estimated to be about 6.5 million animals that are abandoned every year. And even more so when they are just born and young. Read below about a puppy found in the United Kingdom abandoned.

Cocker Spaniel Puppy Found in the United Kingdom Abandoned

Just a few weeks ago, a beautiful cocker spaniel puppy was found dumped behind in a parking lot outside of the Pembroke Dock branch of B&M in Pembrokeshire, in the United Kingdom. What was unique about this puppy was that it was born with six legs; this is sadly the likely reason for this puppy being abandoned to fend for itself.

The dog was immediately sent to the Greenacres Rescue. According to BBC News, “More than £2,000 has been raised to have her two extra back legs surgically removed, but vets have warned she could also lose one of her remaining “normal” back legs in the process.”

Vet Visit

During her checkup at the vet’s office, Fenton Vets, the staff took a shine to this puppy and felt she deserved a name. Because of her legs in the back that are partially fused, they thought it looked like a mermaid’s tail. And so they named this pup “Ariel” after the mermaid Ariel.

“When Ariel was brought into our center she was very scared and timid,” said Mikey Lawlor, Greenacres’ founder, and manager. “She spent that first night at home with me and she was almost completely shut down due to everything she’d been through.”

Sad as it might be, they also assumed that this cocker spaniel was not out long to defend herself. Which probably resulted in the birth of this puppy. And once the owners found out she had extra limbs, they dumped her.

In addition to her extra legs, she also has two vulvas. “The word “vulva” denotes the cone-shaped haired skin that sits between a female dog’s hind legs. Inside the vulva is the opening of the vagina. Plus, the external urethral opening lies on the floor of the inside of the vulva.” One of these vulvas will have to be removed eventually.

These dogs moderately shed their fur.

Cocker spaniels (Canis lupus) of the genus Canis can be found in Europe. These beautiful dogs can weigh anywhere from 20-30 pounds and reach from 14-17 inches in length.

These dogs are extremely good with kids and make perfect additions to families! To own one of these cocker spaniels can range anywhere from $800-$2,000. Of course, that all depends on where you were to find them and how good of care they have been in.
