California has the best lakes in the United States because most of them are incredibly beautiful and captivating. From the charming June Lake to the iconic Lake Tahoe, the Golden State does not disappoint. But this is not the only reason. California’s lakes also offer many recreational opportunities, like boating, fishing, windsurfing, and swimming. In addition, many of them have walking trails to explore. Below are 10 reasons California has the best Lakes in the United States and why you should visit one as soon as possible.

1. Natural Beauty

It’s hard to beat California’s natural beauty. Because the state is bordered by Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Mexico, and the Pacific Ocean, its terrain is very diverse. For example, California offers beaches, cliffs, volcanic lava beds, waterfalls, fertile river valleys, mountains, and deserts.

As a result, lakes in the state are surrounded by different environments. Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Nevada Mountains is the largest lake in the Golden State. The 22-mile-long lake has a maximum depth of 1645 feet. Mountains and lush forests surround it, providing guests with sensational views and complete serenity. The state also has saline lakes, like the Salton Sea in the California Desert and Mono Lake, east of Yosemite. While these lakes are not surrounded by lush greenery, they have a unique beauty that’s hard to find anywhere else.

2. Size and Depth

Lakes in California differ in size and depth. The largest lake in the state by total area is the Salton Sea, which covers 8,3060 square miles. However, this lake is shrinking due to reduced agricultural run-off from more efficient water regulations and farming practices.

The deepest lake in California is Lake Tahoe, with a maximum depth of 1645 feet. Besides the lake’s amazing scenery, it offers various recreational activities, including winter sports like skiing, ice skating, and sledding.

4. Biodiversity

California is the most diverse state in the U.S. It has around 6,500 species of plants, and about 40% of these plants only occur within the state. In addition, the Golden State is home to the world’s largest, tallest, and oldest trees. The reason California has so much biodiversity is due to its Mediterranean-type climate, massive size, and various habitats, including mountains, deserts, and coastlines, which span both the highest and lowest elevations in the contiguous U.S.

9. Cultural and Historical Significance

Each lake in the state has its own history and cultural significance. For example, the largest man-made lake in California, the Shasta Lake, was constructed across the Sacramento River between the 1930s and 1940s. However, people were drawn to the area for agricultural purposes way before the dam was built. In the 1800s, the fertile Sacramento River drew in many farmers moving from the Eastern regions of the U.S.

This large reservoir has provided many recreational opportunities to the locals and visitors. Residents embrace the lake, participating in activities like fishing, boating, and camping.

10. Community Engagement

While many people find Californians in larger cities unfriendly, many smaller communities, especially around the lakes, are happy-go-lucky, friendly, and laid back. They won’t have a problem helping tourists with directions, recommending the best places to eat, or helping them find some local hidden gems.
