If you need proof of just how determined black bears can be when they are on the hunt for food, this is it right here! This long clip shows the extraordinary lengths that one female black bear went to to gain access to a chicken coop. Despite the efforts of both the owner and the authorities, she still had her way. At one point in the saga, a bear was captured in a trap and taken away. But it was the wrong bear! This is a female and a few males have been following her around – one of them ended up getting trapped. Scroll down to see the full extraordinary video of an ultimately successful bear break-in!

What Do Black Bears Normally Eat?

Black bears do not always live on what they can find in chicken coops! Because they are omnivores, they eat both plants and animals. Most of the time, they eat berries and fruit. But they do supplement this with the insects that they come across. They have also been seen eating fish and have a particular love of honeycombs. In the spring, you may see them preying on elk and deer calves. However, they would find it very challenging to take on an adult of these species. Black bears will also scavenge and have been seen finishing off carcasses of animals killed by other predators such as a mountain lion. Increasingly, human settlements are encroaching on traditional black bear territories. This means that they are exposed to human food (including domestic animals and their feed) and human garbage.

Why Are Bears Attracted to Human Food and Garbage?

Our food, including our waste food and garbage, is laden with calories. They provide an easy source of nutrition for these guys because they do not have to go to the effort of digging it up or catching it! However, it is not a good idea for black bears to become dependent on human food sources.

The video below is a perfect illustration of why this is the case. Black bears can become a nuisance. They can cause property damage, and they could even become a threat to human safety. Bears who are no longer cautious of being near humans can become aggressive in some circumstances. This is why the authorities wanted to trap this individual but it was more of a challenge than they were expecting!
