Canada has the most lakes of any country in the world, with a staggering 879,800 to choose from. This amount of water may seem unfathomable, but Canada is the second-largest country on Earth. And glaciation, mountains, and rift zones occur naturally within the country, which is how these natural lakes were formed.

But what about lakes that have abundant recreation and vacation rentals along the water? Well, Canada has plenty of those, too! Whether you want to stay in a luxurious lake resort or pitch a tent in the nearby forest, there are many ways to enjoy the great outdoors near the water. Check out these picks for the four best lakes to vacation on in Canada and learn about their activities, lodging, and nearby attractions.

1. Okanagan Lake

Located in the Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, this stunning blue lake is 90 miles long and surrounded by mountains. And along its shoreline sits over 30 beaches featuring sandy shores, playgrounds, restrooms, and concessions.

Kelowna, Penticton, Peachland, Summerland, West Kelowna, and Vernon are the closest cities to this peaceful lake. And you can also find nearby orchards and vineyards.

During the summer, Okanagan Lake is a popular spot for boating, swimming, parasailing, and other water sports. And the surrounding areas also offer hiking, biking, and camping.

There is a scenic downtown marina in Kelowna, where you can bring or rent boats and walk along the pier. Be sure to check out the luxury dinner cruise! You can also visit a scenic waterfront park, sip on some of the finest wines at a local winery or stay at a nearby ski resort during the winter.

And if you’re looking to stay for a few days near the water, you can check into a high-end lake resort, like the Okanagan Resort, or rent a rustic cabin in the woods.

2. Lake Ontario

As one of the five Great Lakes and the 13th-largest in the world, Lake Ontario is truly massive. Half of the lake is in New York, while the other half is in Ontario. And it’s a very popular body of water known for its unique geographical features, like Niagara Falls, an enormous 360-foot waterfall.

Cities like Ontario, Hamilton, Rochester, and Mississauga line its shores and offer exciting activities and lodging opportunities. Some of the best lake activities include fishing, swimming, boating, water sports, camping, hiking, and birdwatching. Or you can just lay out on one of the many beaches and soak up the summer sun.

The areas around Lake Ontario are famous for their outdoorsy and cultural attractions, such as several state parks, museums, bird observatories, lighthouses, food tours, and aquariums. And you can stay in lakeside resorts and spas or rent a lakefront vacation home. Taking advantage of home rentals is an excellent option if you plan on staying for more than a day or two or if you have a large party. If you want an all-inclusive stay on Lake Ontario, reserve a room at Pillar and Post, an upscale resort and spa with hot springs and fine dining.

3. Lake Winnipeg

Lake Winnipeg is the sixth-largest lake in Canada and the tenth largest by surface area in the world. It was also formed 12,000 years ago and has been an essential trade route. Lake Winnipeg offers over one thousand miles of white sand beaches and relatively shallow water that warms up enough for people to splash and play during the summer.

With its scenic beaches and lakeside cottages, this scenic body of water draws many visitors to its serene doorstep each year. There are several towns along its shores that offer activities and attractions, such as Gimli and Grand Rapids.

The lake is a popular spot for fishing, kayaking, swimming, camping, and sandy strolls on the beach. Along with fun beaches, you will find nearby boardwalks, bandstands, golf courses, markets, parks, casinos, and museums. If you plan on staying near the lake for a few days, check out one of many lakefront resorts or cozy B&Bs, such as Aaron’s on the Lake Bed & Breakfast

4. Lake Erie

As the fourth largest of the Great Lakes, Lake Erie is another massive lake that crosses country lines. This lake forms the boundary between the United States and Canada, with Ontario to the north and Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York to the south, west, and east. And the Niagara River is connecting channel between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario.

Lake Erie is a popular spot for boating, fishing, and water sports. You can also swim during the summer. However, you should be cautious of waves, currents, and drop-offs. This enormous and well-known lake features abundant restaurants, hotels, stores, and activities around its shores from all sides. And it’s a popular staycation area in Canada where you can relax on the beach, visit a museum, or check out a nearby amusement park or other attraction.

From lodges, resorts, and inns, there are many lodging opportunities on the Canadian side of Lake Erie. If you want a relaxed and comfortable stay, book a room at The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake.
