Alabama, a state rich in history, culture, southern cuisine, and hospitality, has quietly climbed to the top of the list of best places to raise a family. U.S. News & World Report’s 2023-2024 Best Places to Live for Families in the U.S. report named Huntsville, AL, the number one best place for families to live in America. Along with Huntsville, numerous places in the Heart of Dixie offer many of the features parents look for in a home. Read on to discover the five best places in Alabama to raise a family!

We compiled these five places using data from Niche. To determine things such as the quality of public schools, education rates, crime and safety, cost of living, diversity, and access to outdoor activities, Niche pooled statistics from the U.S. Census, FBI, U.S. Department of Education, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

5. Vestavia Hills, Suburb of Birmingham

Running right through Birmingham, the Cahaba River is Alabama’s longest remaining stretch of free-flowing river and a global treasure trove of biological diversity.

On the bigger side of our list, Vestavia Hills, a suburb of Birmingham, has a population of 38,504. Despite its size, residents report the area as having a small-town, southern-hospitality feel. Indian Springs Village is a charming suburb of Birmingham in Shelby County. It is primarily residential and offers residents a country-living feel in a quiet, family-friendly setting. The town is just across the highway from Alabama’s largest state park, 10,000-acre Oak Mountain State Park, a popular destination for families looking to get outdoors in nature.

The town has a small population of 2,563, and the median household income is $124,659. Indian Springs Village prides itself on being “uncluttered” and having seven schools.

3. Homewood, Suburb of Birmingham

Meadowbrook is a wonderful option for raising a family. It has a very suburban feel without being too overcrowded and busy. Residents love their friendly neighborhood. Conveniently located near shopping and restaurants, Niche ranked Meadowbrook as the best suburb to buy a house in Alabama.

The median household income in Meadowbrook is almost twice the national average at $128,125. It has a population of 9,503. Meadowbrook’s public schools are highly rated, and the area is dotted with public parks where neighborhood kids enjoy their weekends.

“Thanks to having a highly-educated workforce and growing companies demanding quality employees, 64 percent of all households in the City of Madison have an income greater than $123,831, with a city-wide mean household income of $115,813,” according to the city’s website.

Many families choose Madison for the highly rated public schools and the range of options for those looking for a private education. Niche ranked Madison the number one best school district in Alabama. Compared to many regions in Alabama, the area has a relatively low risk of extreme weather and natural disasters. With plenty of public parks and green spaces, families looking for a calm, suburban area to raise a family should consider Madison.
