The biggest state in the United States is Alaska — not even close when compared to the rest considering that it’s larger than Texas, California, and Montana combined. When you think of Alaska, you probably think of cold weather, the great outdoors, and tons of different animals. For most of the state, this is all true. However, there are parts of Alaska that are populated enough for a downtown business district.

The city with the most people and the largest downtown area in Alaska is Anchorage. More than 290,000 people call this beautiful city home. Since it’s home to the largest downtown area, it’s safe to assume the tallest building in Alaska is there. That would be a correct assumption. Here’s what you need to know about the tallest building in Alaska.

For the purposes of this article, we won’t include structures. You can find more information about the tallest structure in Alaska here. Standing at 296 feet tall, the Conoco-Phillips Building in downtown Anchorage is the tallest building in the state. Construction began back in 1981 and in 1983, this beautiful skyscraper was opened for business.

This building is the corporate home of the ConocoPhillips company for the Alaska district. ConocoPhillips is known for being in the oil and gasoline business. Given the fact Alaska is home to some of the largest quantities of oil in the United States, it makes sense for ConocoPhillips to own a building in Anchorage.

There is a second building connected to the main building that serves as the local branch for many companies. Those who wish to see Alaska from the top of the tallest building are in luck, as the top has a sky-lit atrium. There might not be a better place to take in the beautiful nighttime auroras that occasionally settle over Alaska. Knowing that the tallest building is only 296 feet tall might have you curious about the shortest tallest building in a state. So, which state has the shortest tallest building?

Does Alaska Have the Shortest Tallest Building?

Even though it only stands at 296 feet tall, the Conoco-Phillips Building isn’t the shortest tallest building in a state. That title belongs to Vermont. In downtown Burlington, Decker Towers stands at 124 feet tall. Even though it’s only 124 feet, it’s still the tallest building in the state of Vermont. If you were looking to find Alaska on this list, they’d come in as having the 42nd shortest-tallest building. Will Alaska be moving up this list by getting another tall building soon?

Unfortunately for those in Alaska, it doesn’t appear any other tall buildings will be built anytime soon. The only structure that appears to be giving the Conoco-Phillips Building a run for its money is a new air traffic control tower at the airport. For the purposes of this list, only business or residential buildings count. That being said, a lack of skyscrapers might not be the worst thing. While a beautiful skyline adds to the allure of a city, Alaska is home to some of the most magnificent views of nature. The many mountain ranges and beautiful lakes are easy to admire in Alaska.

Have There Been Any Cancelled Tall Building Projects in Alaska?

Within Anchorage, the most populated city in Alaska, there have been two different buildings that would have rivaled for the tallest. Both were canceled before the ground was even broken. Back in 2010, it was planned that the Augustine Energy Center would open up as another office space downtown. It’s unknown exactly how tall this building would have reached, but plans included 21 floors. This is the same amount as the current tallest building.

The other building that would have almost certainly taken the top spot was the Peach Tower. This tower was going to be a combination of a hotel and private residences located in Anchorage. The Peach Tower was going to have a total of 28 floors, which would have put it at the top of the list for tallest buildings more than likely.

Those who love city life might not fully think of Alaska, but there is still a vibrant downtown area in Anchorage. You’ll find people who love the blend of its bustling metropolitan area with easy access to some of the best nature in the world. Alaska has a little bit of something for most people. Make sure you check out downtown Anchorage the next time you’re thinking about taking an Alaskan vacation or cruise. When you get there, going to the Conoco-Phillips building should be a must-do on your list. Having a rooftop view that’s enclosed for warmth to take in the beautiful Alaska nights is something everyone should experience.
