Sunflowers are an iconic symbol of happiness, popular for staged photoshoots due to their beauty and surrounding charm. Never-ending fields of sunflowers stretching their long slender, yet sturdy stalks to the sun emote positivity and calmness, putting smiles on the faces of those nearby. But with all the different sunflower types, did you ever wonder how big the tallest sunflower is?

The tallest sunflower ever grown came out of Karst, Nordhein Westfalen, Germany, soaring three stories into the sky, ultimately reaching an impressive height of 30 feet and 1 inch. Veteran German gardener Hans-Peter Schiffer is the current Guinness World Record sunflower grower.

Veteran Gardener Produced the Tallest Sunflower in the World

Hans-Peter Schiffer is no stranger to growing record-height sunflowers. Schiffer has held the record for tallest sunflowers several times before his current record. He produced records for the tallest sunflower in 2009, at 26.3 feet; in 2012, at 27 feet; and then again in 2013, at 28.7 feet. His current record of 30 feet one inch has stood since 2014.

The record almost didn’t happen because of a thunderstorm that blew through, producing hail that damaged Schiffer’s sunflowers. But even though most of the sunflower leaves experienced hail damage, the plants survived and continued to grow. The record sunflower was precisely measured with the help of the local fire department and the construction of a large platform connected to multi-level scaffolding around the sunflower.

Tallest Sunflower in the United States

While Schiffer can lay claim to the tallest sunflower ever grown in the world, Alex Babich from Fort Wayne, Indiana, is the record holder for the tallest sunflower in the United States. He is a plant enthusiast who loved the look of the giant sunflowers. When he noticed that this particular sunflower kept growing, he checked on the latest current record. It was 24 feet nine inches tall, set by a man in Michigan in 2017.

Babich fed his sunflower every two days, and when he knew he was at least close to the record, he climbed a ladder that was positioned on a wooden tower previously built to protect his flower field. His measurement came in at 24 feet 10 inches, one inch taller than the previous record. In the summer of 2022, Babich became a world record holder for tallest sunflower grown in the United States.
