Predators in the wild have earned a title that demands respect. When we hear the word “predator” we imagine magnificent animals such as lions, bears, sharks, or pythons. Whether it be their strength, speed, or stamina these predators wield power when we hear their name.

But, for whatever reason, sometimes prey can defy all odds and outsmart a predator’s strength, speed, and stamina. Let’s see how clever this antelope is in this cheetah hunt in the video below.

Cheetah Hunt Sighting in Africa

This TikTok video posted at the top of this blog takes us to Africa, the land where wild animals roam freely. This video was captured of a wild cheetah hunt. The Wild Life Animals YouTube page is a tremendous supporter of all things wildlife. Their recent videos on their channel are of spiders, owls, zebras, bunnies, leopards, and birds.

Dramatic Antelope Escape

At the start of this video, we see three cheetahs lying in wait in the grass. They are letting their spotty golden fur help them blend into the tall grass as they await this antelope coming by. Once one cheetah is determined the antelope is close enough, the cheetah puts his paws to the dirt and takes off. He is kicking up dirt and grass as he speeds through the open plains to get to this meal.

The great thing about platforms like TikTok is the content creators’ ability to add dramatic music to the clip. This intense music and its slow-down effect allow us to relish the moment that is happening. As soon as the cheetah gets in close, the antelope can feel his pounding paws on the ground, and he attacks off. He uses a zig-zag pattern and somehow escapes the fastest land predator in the world.

It’s important to note the cheetah’s (Acinonyx jubatus) slender body that plays a part in giving him the ability to have incredible speed. The cheetah weighs anywhere from 80-140 pounds and reaches up to five feet in length.

Discover Wildlife states that cheetahs can reach amazing speeds of up to 75 miles per hour. But, what’s incredible to add about these animals is that not only are they fast, but they can accelerate when they are running. “Researchers found they can increase their speed by 10kph in a single stride.”

Because of their amazing ability to run Ferrari-type fast, they can catch quick prey such as gazelles, wildebeest, and hares. However, as we can see from the video posted above sometimes even the fastest of cheetahs are not able to catch clever animals such as this antelope.
