When we think of little kids and what types of animals they might be frightened of, we would imagine a barking pitbull, a bear jumping up on the glass at a zoo, or even a goat that licked from their hand at a petting zoo. Well, this little boy can add massive giraffes to the list! Don’t miss the action in the video below.

Massive Giraffe Gets Within Inches of Little Boy

As the video above starts out we see this is a self-driving tour through a safari park. These types of tours are tremendous opportunities to get closer to animals than you would at your typical local zoo where we see them locked in cages. On these tours, the humans are the ones who are locked up in their cars. And animals are free to roam.

Well, this family stopped, when they saw two enormous giraffes that happened to be walking in the road. These 20-foot animals are enough to make anyone think twice when crossing them. However, not only they are just plain tall, but according to the Center for Biological Diversity, giraffes are the “tallest land mammal, with a neck as long as 6 feet.” And we will see just how long this neck is in a moment.

The family rolls their window down. And entices these mammals to come over by sticking out their hand that is filled with food. The giraffe in front takes the bait and licks it up in a second. But, then he smells that the little boy in the car has food in the bag on his lap. He sticks his six-foot head in the car and rolls out his 20-inch long tongue into the bag to get the food.

Terrified would probably be an understatement. The little boy cringes and freezes in terror, all the while wondering if this massive giraffe will harm him.

Why Do Giraffes Have Long Necks?

From watching the video above, you probably noticed that when the family went to feed the giraffe, he didn’t even have to walk up next to the car. After all, this six-foot neck was able to not only reach up to the car but also into the car to get more food.

As herbivores, giraffes eat things such as leaves, fruits, seeds, and flowers. Their long necks give them the ability to reach up high into the trees to get the coveted fruit that many other animals cannot get.

Not only are their necks good for food, but also the National Library of Medicine shares that “As the tallest extant terrestrial mammal, its elevated head height provides panoramic surveillance of the environment.” Giraffes have to worry about predators such as lions, leopards, and hyenas. Their elongated neck gives them the advantage of their own in-house security system so to speak to protect them. And also gives them the ability to reach into cars for food they can sniff out!
