Few things amaze us here at A-Z Animals as a team of writers. We have seen a lot of amazing footage; however, seeing the way these seals all work together as a team and get this shark out is nothing short of incredible.

Sharks and Seals Sighting in South Africa

The next YouTube video posted at the top of this blog post takes us off the coast of South Africa. This video was filmed and then shared by the BBC Earth YouTube page. This channel is a leader in the educational space with nature and animals. We regularly see videos of birds, giraffes, kangaroos, flamingos, otters, horses, wasps, and monkeys, to name a few. The BBC Earth team shares a short description of what the video is about below.

“Off the coast of South Africa, seals risk their lives every time they go to eat. But in recent years, they’ve developed a behavior to protect themselves from one of the most fearsome predators of the ocean – the Great White Shark.”

At the start of this documentary, we see a great white shark. He is patrolling Africa’s southern coast. He is on the hunt for something delicious to eat. And weighing up to 5,000 pounds, this shark has a voracious appetite.

There are dozens of seals that are up on the rocks and are diving into the water below. They know the dangers of what lurks in those African waters. However, they have to eat as well, and they must risk it to survive and stay alive. They dive down deep and grab fish that are traveling in groups.

Where great white sharks are usually solitary hunters, we see these great whites banding together to catch a seal or two. The seals band together to keep close to the rocks and away from harm’s way. However, they aren’t all able to stay out of the way of the great white shark snatching them up. At this point, these seals realize there is power in numbers, and they bravely band together and kick this great white shark out!

What Do Seals Eat?

Seals (Phoca vitulina) of the family Pinnipedia are large mammals that can weigh up to 6,000 pounds. While not all seals weigh that much, they can weigh as little as 230 pounds, probably about as much as the seals in this video above weigh.

Seals are carnivorous eaters and prey on fish, crabs, squid, octopus, and lobsters, to list a few. A seal can weigh about four to six percent of their body weight in food every day, according to the NOAA Fisheries.
