Sometimes, when we go hunting and fishing, we have specific animals in mind that we want to catch. Perhaps it is a deer, elk, spotted sunfish, or bluegill. However, sometimes we get more than we bargained for. And sometimes other animals intervene! In the case of this short TikTok video shown below, we see someone fishing, only they didn’t get what they were expecting!

As the video starts, we see a fishing line traveling behind a boat, and it has a large piece of bait on it. This fisherman is hoping he will catch something good. Suddenly, if we pause the short video for three seconds, we see an enormous fish coming up from behind. It takes only one further second for us to see that this is a huge marlin! He quickly comes up and snatches it and the line and swims off!

Check Out the Incredible Video Below!

It is a lucky thing this fisherman was able to record this whole experience. We will bet big money that this fisherman wasn’t expecting a marlin. One TikTok user comically commented, “Y’all didn’t see him put his fins in sport mode.” And he sure did put it in sports mode as quickly as he was able to catch up and snatch it right out from under this fisherman’s nose.

There are four species of marlins:

  • Black Marlin
  • Blue Marlin
  • Striped Marlin
  • White Marlin.

Let’s dive down and learn about the black marlin!

Black marlins of the family Istiophordae can be found in the Pacific and Indian oceans. These large fish can weigh as much as 749 kilograms (1,653 pounds.) And they can reach incredible lengths of 184 inches (15 feet) long.

These fish are omnivores, and they like to prey on food such as octopods, squid, and fish. So, as we can imagine, when this large marlin in the video posted above smelled this fish, it was an opportunity too good to pass up.

How Fast Can Black Marlins Swim

The black marlin is listed in our top 10 fastest fish in the ocean. The black marlin is listed among other fast fish, such as the following.

  1. Sailfish
  2. Swordfish
  3. Wahoo
  4. Tuna
  5. Bonito
  6. Mako shark
  7. Blue shark
  8. Bonefish
  9. Four-winged flying fish.

According to research, it is estimated that black marlins can swim up to 30 miles per hour — an impressive speed! However, there was a claim made that a black marlin had been “clocked at 82 mph was made by the BBC after a fisherman caught a black marlin on a line.”
