Quick Take
- A tiger chases a wild canid toward the edge of the woods before an elephant steps in and appears to block the predator’s path.
- The most striking moment is the elephant’s reaction, using its size and loud warning display to stand between the tiger and the fleeing animal.
- The encounter highlights how unpredictable wildlife behavior can be, especially when multiple large species collide in the same space.
The fight for survival is often a fight that is fought alone for the predator and prey. Once the prey has been locked in, other animals will rarely intervene. However, there are many cases in which, for some reason, animals intervene to help one another.
We see such a situation in the video shown above. This video was posted by the YouTube channel Wildlife with Irfan, which shares wildlife footage and safari-style sightings.
The video starts with a wild chase between a wild dog and a tiger. This wild dog knows he has absolutely no chance against the tiger. The best thing he can possibly do is try to outrun the tiger, which is likely impossible.
We hear the photographer firing off multiple shots as the chase unfolds, and we see footage of the wild dog trying various evasive maneuvers to escape this predator.Â
As they near the edge of the woods, the tiger closes in and the wild dog knows he’s likely caught — until it spots an enormous elephant. The elephant appears to react to the commotion and positions itself between the tiger and the dog.
Shockingly, we see this elephant protect the wild dog. It starts to trumpet loudly and steps to the tiger. The elephants is not afraid of the tiger, and seeing as it outweighs this predator by up to 40 times, at the very least, it is not fearful of repercussions.
