Elephants are known to be gentle yet powerful giants, but they can get aggressive when provoked or bothered. A recent video showed evidence of just that.

As a young woman calmly approached and touched a large elephant while standing in the water with it, the elephant suddenly launched her in the air as though she was a rag doll. The woman went flying within seconds of the elephant flinging her. Thankfully, she wasn’t seriously injured, but the elephant was certainly powerful enough to make her airborne. You can watch the video for yourself at the end of this article.

Where Do Elephants Live?

Elephants live in Africa and Asia. They mainly reside in savannas, deserts, marshes, and forests near rivers. Elephants are known to be one of the smartest animals in the world, with the ability to exhibit self-awareness and self-recognition, learn and remember details, and potentially even experience emotion.

Are Elephants Aggressive?

Typically, elephants are peaceful, calm creatures. However, some can become aggressive, especially if they’re protecting their young calves or feeling ill or injured. Additionally, if a human or predator were to harass them, elephants could become reactive to such physical threats.

When an elephant does attack, it usually establishes its dominance by showcasing its strength and social position. It might also “stand tall” as a way to threaten the other creature, as well as shake its head or swish its tale. These are all signs of aggression you should look out for. Can you find any of these signs in the video at the end of the article?

How Strong Are Elephants?

Elephants are the strongest mammals and strongest land animals. In fact, these creatures have around 100,000 muscles and tendons along their trunk and can lift nearly 800 pounds. For reference, that’s about as massive as a large tree. Additionally, the largest male elephant can weigh up to 15,000 pounds. Newborn elephants weigh more than the average adult male human, standing at around 200 pounds at birth.
