Playing chicken with a train is one of the most dangerous things that can be done. The amount of power, force, and strength that a freight train has far surpasses that of a man or a car. However, on this one particular sunny day in South Florida, an alligator decided not to play chicken with this train. This gator wasn’t interested in trying to cross the road before the train got close to him. Rather, he was interested in facing this train head on! There can only be one animal on these tracks, and this gator has decided this freight train is not welcome.

At the start of the video, we see an enormous yellow freight train that is stopped on the tracks. We are first relieved because we know this train won’t be progressing. However, the train suddenly starts to pick up speed! It wasn’t stopped after all!

This massive alligator continues to refuse to get out of harm’s way. We see this gator moving his little legs. As the train moves faster, he puts his head up and opens his enormous jaw to show who the boss is.

Freight trains can be any number of sizes in length. According to the Association of American Railroads, “Recent legislation defines a long train as 7,500 feet.” Freight trains can carry up to 4,089 tons (9,014,702 pounds)!

How Large is the American Alligator?

The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is of the genus Alligator. Though the alligator is no match for the size of a freight train, these beasts are absolute monsters for size! They can weigh anywhere from 181-363 kilograms (400-800 pounds). They can also reach up to 2.5-4.5 meters (8-15 feet) in length.
