Each year, the spending costs for holidays increase in the United States. As the economy ebbs and flows, retail spending always seems to increase steadily. Although Halloween may not be as popular a holiday as Thanksgiving, Memorial Day, and Christmas in the United States, we will still be able to see a record high for expenditure this season.
How Much Do Americans Spend on Halloween Costumes for Pets?
Halloween started as a celebrated holiday every year on October 31st. At this time, people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. This originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. Over time, it has developed into a holiday where all people, men, women, and children, dress up each year and celebrate the spooky season with candy and good memories.
Although Halloween costume spending has increased steadily each year, there was a dip in 2020 during the pandemic. However, since then, spending has increased to an all-time high. Halloween costumes, in general, are estimated to be at $12.2 billion this 2023.
The National Retail Federation estimates the spending costs for Halloween costumes for pets alone to skyrocket to $700 million.
Forbes estimates that 66% of U.S. households own a pet of some kind in the year 2023. This would be approximately 87 million homes in total.
Of course, when we think of pets, our minds go to cats and dogs. However, other common pets for families in the U.S. are fish, reptiles, horses, rabbits, and birds, to list a few.

The families who celebrate Halloween are on the hunt for costumes, but it might not be as soon as you might think.
According to Statista, “ For costumes, for instance, about a quarter of surveyed shoppers planned to acquire theirs between two and three weeks in advance. Less than 10 percent of shoppers said they would start shopping one to three days in advance.”
According to the National Retail Federation, “The most popular pet costumes include a pumpkin (11%), a hot dog (7%), a bat (4%), a bumblebee (3%) and a spider (3%).” Take a look at the rank of the top ten costumes for pets below.
