Choosing the Best What to Look For

When buying a bark collar for your small dog in 2022, there are some important factors to consider. Below are four factors you must consider before making a purchase.

Collar Type

There are different kinds of bark collars in the market for small dogs. Some include sound and vibration, shock, and spray collars. Your dog’s temperament and age could play a role in your choice. For example, some dog parents believe using a shock collar for a puppy is too much.

Price

The best bark collar for your small dog is one that offers you great value for the money you pay. So before making your purchase, match the price with the features.

Weight

The best bark collar for small dogs should be light and not too cumbersome. You don’t want to make your small dog uncomfortable the entire time they wear the collar.

Durability

You need a collar that you can trust on your dog, not one that they can chew off easily. A collar like that could become a health hazard for your small dog.

The Different Types of Barks Collars for Small Dogs: Pros and Cons Compared

Dog collars generally come in three kinds: vibration and sound, shock, and spray. Below we discuss each of these types with their pros and cons.

Vibration and Sound Collars

These collars emit a sound and also vibrate to stop your dog from barking. They are less frightening, especially for puppies, but you must ensure the vibrations work on your pet. Long-haired dogs, for example, could experience a lower vibration-reducing the collar’s effectiveness.

Shock Collars

Shock collars are the most controversial type of collars but are also really effective. The options in our picks have intensities that you can regulate. If you still mind, you can try out the vibration and sound or spray collars.

Spray collars

Spray collars are the mildest bark collars for small dogs in 2022. They could, however, be expensive as you’ll have to buy more spray cartridges, especially if your dog is a slow learner.

Verified User Experience

Dogcare Bark Collar

The Dogcare Bark Collar comes at a great price and is loved by our testers. “I was very hesitant to try a shock collar. We have a “houseguest” who was literally barking all night, keeping us awake. Tried one of the “spray” type collars, which had zero effect on her. Finally broke down and ordered this. Works BEAUTIFULLY. After a little more than a week, I don’t think we’d even have to turn it on, she’s quiet as soon as we put it on her. Been better than a week of overnight use, and it still has full charge! Highly recommend! Mentioned it to a friend and she ordered THREE for her three dogs and raves about how effective they are.”

Some testers would, however, love a better design for the collars. Here’s what one tester had to say, “My recently adopted Malinois will bark and circle and bark and circle all day in the pen when I am not with her. The bark collar worked for a while on the vibration-only setting, but she soon got used to it. Changed to the low sensitivity setting in shock mode. She quickly learned to bark softly. I still needed her to shut up. After upping the sensitivity, she quit barking altogether and without apparent stress. So, it works. So far.

The straps, however, are an abysmal design mess. Why not a simple buckle design?”

PATPET Anti-Bark Training Collar

PATPET made a winner with this dog training collar that comes at a great price. Our testers love this bark collar. “This bark collar works very well. I chose not to install the shock pins, so tone and vibration works well. I have 3 little dogs that love to bark, and when one starts, they all get going.

In just one day, I rotated the collar amongst all 3. They all experienced the correction, and they each stopped barking immediately. Now, I pick a victim of the 3, and when the tone sounds on the one dog, they all hear it, and they all stop. Finally, silence!”

While this dog collar helps, some testers noticed some loud noises activated it. “This collar has definitely helped curb my dog’s barking. He has hound in him so he has a howl-like bark and he is now aware of the collar and does a lighter growl/bark so as to not trigger it but that’s more of a smart dog thing than a collar. I did take away a star since loud noises outside of my dog can trigger the collar as well. I’ve had a loud laugh and even my dog’s tail hitting the wall trigger it. I don’t recommend it if you have two dogs that bark since one dog’s bark could trigger the other dog’s collar. Over all, the collar has helped with my dog and his barking personally.”

PetSafe Remote Spray Collar

The PetSafe Remote Spray Collar is a great humane choice for training small dogs. This testers loved the results it gave with their dog. “My dog started barking incessantly when he was about 2 and a half. He started barking at animals on TV, my cats, and people walking their dogs (and we live on the fifth floor). He was basically barking at everything. I bought this because I didn’t want to use a shock collar because he is tiny. A trainer recommended the citronella. But in reality, whatever tone they have programmed on the beep setting is very effective. We hardly ever use the spray as the beep stops his barking almost immediately. The vibration setting doesn’t seem to do anything, but I am very happy with my purchase and would recommend the new version with cartridges.”

Some testers, however, complained about it being hard to find the refills. “So far this has worked great for my Doberman. We use it to help her to interact properly with the other dogs in our house, since she plays way too rough with them. I didn’t want to use a shock collar and have the Doberman think the other dogs were attacking her when she was being corrected. Now she thinks if she plays too rough the other dogs squirt her with smelly stuff. It has worked great. If I could only find more refills…”

Elecane Small Dog Bark Collar

Testers love how effective the Elecane Bark Collar is with their puppies. “We have two small puppies who bark incessantly when they see other people and or dogs. They bark from excitement and it was getting out of hand to the point we were embarrassed to take them on walks. They would bark at people from 50 feet away….Very annoying. So we wanted to stop this behavior while they are still young. We did not want to use a shock collar unless it was absolutely necessary. I was just about to buy a competitor’s collar when I saw this one – which is for smaller dogs. We have only used this collar 4 or 5 times for an hour or two and it has curbed their barking by an estimated 75-80%. In less than 1 week! And when they bark they don’t continue incessantly like before. The odd thing is they are not afraid of wearing it although they definitely do not like the beeping sound it emits. The collar progressively escalates to longer beeps and then vibration if they continue to bark. This is an ingenious solution that is humane and really gets a dog’s attention in a manner I would not have thought would be this effective.”

Some testers, however, found their dog could ignore this collar after a while. “We have two Yorkie-mix dogs (5 years old). Barking has been bad since we moved. These collars worked like a dream for the first few weeks, but they’ve lost nearly all effectiveness. Works better for the smaller dog (7 lbs). The bigger one (14 lbs) just barks through. Now we hear beeping/vibrating in addition to barking. Would not recommend it for over 7 lbs. For the price, it’s worth a shot.”
