The United States Interstate Highway System is a marvel of engineering. This highway system comprises almost 50,000 miles of roadways that connect major cities, facilitating citizens’ movement as well as commerce. Interstate 95, also called I-95, is a north-south highway that runs down the East Coast of the country. Learn about the 15 states Interstate 95 runs through and find out which part of the state the highway system passes through.

We’re going to list these states moving roughly north to south throughout the United States.

1. Maine

Interstate 95 runs through 303 miles of Maine. The highway begins at the border with New Brunswick, Canada near the town of Houlton. From there, the roadway travels west and then southwest, reaching Bangor. I-95 departs this city and travels west and then south again, passing through Augusta and Portland before eventually reaching the next state.

2. New Hampshire

The interstate picks up in Salisbury, Massachusetts in the far northeastern corner of the state. The roadway flows south to South Peabody and then turns west, traveling far around the outskirts of the Boston metropolitan area. The highway makes a semicircle around Lexington, Waltham, and Dedham before plunging southwest, ending near Attleboro after traveling for 92 miles through the state.

4. Rhode Island

Maryland is one of the other states Interstate 95 runs through. The roadway enters the state in Elkton and takes a long, west-southwest course, crossing over the Susquehanna River and eventually reaching Baltimore. The interstate passes along the eastern side of the city before turning west on the southern end of Baltimore. Once past the city, the roadway turns southwest again. Near Beltsville, the road curves to the east, going around most of Washington D.C. as part of the Capital Beltway. The interstate then passes over the Potomac River, exiting the state after traveling 110 miles.

11. Virginia

Technically, I-95 passes through a part of Washington D.C., but we have excluded that from this list since we’re strictly looking at the states Interstate 95 runs through. The roadway passes into the nation’s capital for 0.10 miles just before the roadway enters Virginia.

The interstate passes below Alexandria traveling west. Next, the roadway turns south near Springfield and continues on a southwesterly course through the state until Fredericksburg where it turns south. The interstate passes through Richmond and continues south-southwest before exiting the state in Greensville County.

12. North Carolina

Interstate 95 enters North Carolina in Northampton County in the northeastern part of the state. The roadway plunges through the state, traveling past Rocky Mount and Fayetteville, mostly traveling in a southwest direction. Eventually, the roadway exits North Carolina in Robeson County after an 181-mile journey through the state.

13. South Carolina

I-95 enters South Carolina in Dillon County. Like many other states on the list, the roadway generally travels southwest through the state. The interstate passes near Florence and Shiloh as it makes its 199-mile journey through the Palmetto State. The roadway even passes over Lake Marion, the largest lake in South Carolina. The interstate exits the state halfway across the Savannah River.

14. Georgia

Interstate 95 flows into Georgia in Effingham County and travels west of Savannah. The roadway travels through Pooler, Richmond Hill, and the outskirts of the Brunswick metro area. At this point, the road is moving south-southwest. However, the road travels almost due south as it nears Camden County, the endpoint of its journey in the state. All in all, the roadway travels for 112 miles through Georgia.

15. Florida

Florida is the last of the states Interstate 95 runs through on our list. Depending on how you look at it, this could be the start of the interstate, though. The roadway enters Florida by passing over St. Mary’s River in Nassau County. The interstate travels in a generally southern direction, running south to Jacksonville. The roadway turns southeast past Jacksonville, following near the coast. Then, this roadway goes through Palm Coast, Daytona Beach, and West Palm Beach. The roadway also connects to Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and finally Miami. I-95 terminates or begins just south of Miami along U.S. Route 1. Florida has the longest section of I-95 of any state with 382 miles of the roadway.
