Discover Animals That Hibernate: A 5-Day Unit Plan for Elementary Students

Published 1 min read

Hibernation is a remarkable adaptation that mammals living in colder regions have developed to survive the winter months when food is scarce. Animals slow down their heart rates, lower their body temperature, and enter a sleep state where they may not wake for weeks or even months. From the powerful grizzly bear to the curious chipmunk, hibernation allows animals to conserve energy and prepare their bodies to emerge in the spring ready to forage and reproduce.

Groundhog in the hole

In our five-day unit plan, elementary-aged students will discover more about what hibernation is, why animals hibernate, and specific animals that hibernate, including grizzly bears, chipmunks, groundhogs, and bats. Included in the unit plan are five days’ worth of comprehensive daily lesson plans, instructional resources, downloadable and printable worksheets, vocabulary activities, graphic organizers, writing templates, comprehension questions, children’s book suggestions, and more. We hope you enjoy our fascinating cross-curricular unit on animals that hibernate, uniquely designed to engage our youngest learners in the incredible ways that animals survive the winter!
