Hibernation is a remarkable adaptation that mammals living in colder regions have developed to survive the winter months when food is scarce. Animals slow down their heart rates, lower their body temperature, and enter a sleep state where they may not wake for weeks or even months. From the powerful grizzly bear to the curious chipmunk, hibernation allows animals to conserve energy and prepare their bodies to emerge in the spring ready to forage and reproduce.
