Urban wildlife, or animals that live in human neighborhoods, cities and towns, exist all around us, co-inhabiting our environment, and adapting to live alongside us. From birds like pigeons and cardinals to mammals like squirrels and raccoons, many different species have become abundant and are thriving in urban areas by taking advantage of human resources. Urban biologists and ecologists continue to further study the behavior and populations of animals that live simultaneously near humans and how human activity can impact ecosystems and biodiversity in both negative and beneficial ways.

In our five-day unit, designed for elementary-aged students, children will learn more about how certain animal species thrive in urban environments and explore specific urban wildlife, including squirrels, raccoons, pigeons and lizards.
Included in the unit plan are five days’ worth of comprehensive lesson plans, graphic organizers, educational video ideas, children’s book suggestions, comprehension questions, instructional resources, writing templates, and research activities.
We hope you enjoy exploring more about the animals that live and thrive all around us!
