Xoloitzcuintlis: A Brief History

Socializing your Xoloitzcuintlis early on will ensure that they get along well with strangers and other animals.

The Xoloitzcuintli, or simply the “Xolo,” for short, is a rare dog breed that originated in Mexico thousands of years ago. Although they were originally bred to serve as working animals, many people today choose to keep them as companions. While some Xolos have become successful guard dogs, this breed isn’t the best choice for this role. According to the American Kennel Club, “These dogs will speak up and let you know if anyone comes to the house — but since they can be reserved with strangers, don’t expect them to frighten off any intruders.” These dogs enjoy cuddling on the couch just as much as they do running and playing. They are adaptable, intelligent, affectionate, well-mannered, and unwaveringly loyal. These qualities have endeared them to many, and owners often remark that the love of a Xoloitzcuintli is like no other.

Because Xoloitzcuintlis are somewhat rare, purchasing one can be expensive.

Xoloitzcuintlis come in three sizes: toy, miniature, and standard. The size, weight, and overall appearance of your Xolo will be greatly influenced by which size you pick. Toy Xoloitzcuintlis will weigh between 10 and 15 pounds, miniature Xoloitzcuintlis will weigh between 15 and 30 pounds, and the standard Xoloitzcuintli will weigh between 30 and 55 pounds. As with any breed, male Xolos are typically larger, more muscular, leaner, and heavier than their female counterparts at maturity. The typical standard adult male Xoloitzcuintli will weigh between 30 and 55 pounds, whereas females will weigh slightly less at 25 to 50 pounds. Both genders are hairless, which is a huge bonus for dog lovers with allergies.

Male vs. Female Xoloitzcuintlis: Behavioral Differences

Xoloitzcuintlis are flexible dogs who often take on the personality of their owners.

While both genders will share the same general personality traits, their individual behavior will vary slightly based on their gender. For example, male Xolos are slightly more excitable than females. They enjoy playing hard and loving hard, and many owners describe them as balls of energy as puppies. These dogs love attention and bonding with their owners. On the other hand, females are more independent and rely less on constant validation from their owners. They are equally as loving and affectionate, but less needy. However, females are prone to moodiness especially if left intact. Owners that work long hours or spend significant time away from home should consider another breed as both genders need ample human interaction in order to thrive.

Male vs. Female Xoloitzcuintlis: Vocalizations

While both genders are somewhat quiet overall, Xoloitzcuintlis have a powerful bark when they choose to use it. Generally speaking, male Xoloitzcuintlis are more chatty than females. They are very alert, and many owners report that their male Xolos bark at any perceived disturbances. Although their bark can be very loud, it typically doesn’t last long. As long as they know their humans are aware of the potential danger, they’ll begin to relax. Female Xoloitzcuintlis are slightly quieter in day-to-day life.

The average lifespan of a Xoloitzcuintli is between 13 and 18 years.

Both male and female Xoloitzcuintlis are typically healthy animals. However, there are gender-specific health concerns that owners should be aware of before bringing one home. As with any dog breed, the risk of ovarian and testicular cancer is greatly mitigated by spaying or neutering your pup. Unless you plan on using your dog for breeding, veterinarians recommend that you schedule this procedure sometime before your Xolo turns two years old. Xoloitzcuintlis are also at risk of developing vision-related medical issues, skin conditions, dysplasia, and patellar luxation.

Male vs. Female Xoloitzcuintlis: Response to Training

Early socialization is key for both genders as this will help combat shyness and aggression later on in life.

Compared to other dog breeds, training a Xoloitzcuintli can be a bit arduous. However, this is not for lack of intelligence. Instead, this breed can be quite stubborn and anxious. While many owners elect to take their Xolo to a professional trainer, some decide to train their puppies at home. This process can be a bit time-consuming and challenging, but consistency is key. Reward your Xolo for exhibiting the behaviors you want them to repeat with treats, affection, or verbal praise. Keeping your Xolo engaged in the lesson is very important as these dogs may become distracted. Males might be slightly more difficult to train than females because they’re very high-energy as adolescents.

Final Thoughts

It’s clear to see why so many people are head over heels for Xoloitzcuintlis. This breed is flexible and has the ability to adapt well to a variety of different household dynamics. Male dogs are better suited for families who have a lot of time on their hands to dedicate to training and socializing with their animals. On the other hand, female Xoloitzcuintlis are slightly lower-maintenance which is perfect for busy families. No matter what gender you choose, there’s no doubt that you can expect many years of companionship and happiness with your Xolo.
