How Do Darkling Beetles ‘Fog-Bask’?

Darkling beetles are a resilient species that make the most of their harsh environments. These beetles inhabit the deserts of southwestern Africa, where there is little rainfall. To compensate for this, they use a unique method to obtain water: they get it from the air. More specifically, these beetles harvest water from dew and fog. To get water, they practice something called fog-basking. Fog-basking is a behavior where an insect or animal faces into the wind to absorb water from the environment.

The beetles do this by raising their rear ends into the air. The cool fog hits their bodies and condenses into water droplets that collect on their hydrophilic shells. The water then runs down their bodies toward their mouthparts, where the beetles can drink the collected droplets. Their shells emit heat, which contrasts with the cool air and helps promote condensation.

This amazing ability is inspiring scientific research aimed at helping humans collect water in similar ways. This is known as biomimicry, or emulating nature in our own engineering practices. Researchers are analyzing the beetles’ bodies, especially their shell structure, to develop similar methods for collecting water.
