Colorado is renowned for its natural beauty, outdoor culture, and captivating history. From its majestic peaks to its thriving urban areas, the Centennial State offers endless attractions and experiences. Knowing where to start may feel overwhelming if you are planning to visit or are new to the state. But don’t worry. Colorado residents are here to help. There are plenty of places, experiences, and adventures that await you. Starting with some of the things that make Coloradans most proud, or even what the state is famous for, and you can’t miss. Natural Wonders

The state simply has too many natural wonders to list. So, here are some of the top reasons residents love it there. And why visitors keep coming back for more.

1. Rocky Mountains

Colorado’s crown jewel is the majestic Rocky Mountains, which draw outdoor enthusiasts and adventure seekers from around the globe. With 53 fourteeners (mountains over 14,000 feet), the state offers unparalleled opportunities for hiking, mountaineering, and skiing amidst awe-inspiring landscapes. Head out for a day, a weekend, or a full week — whatever you feel up to.

2. Outdoor Recreation

While the Rocky Mountains are a huge draw for people, they are not the only spot for outdoor recreation. Colorado’s natural beauty and sunny climate make it an outdoor enthusiast’s paradise. There are endless opportunities for outdoor recreation, including hiking, mountain biking, whitewater rafting, skiing, snowboarding, and snowshoeing, ensuring adventure and enjoyment throughout the year.

3. Pikes Peak

This fourteener is one of Colorado’s most iconic mountains. And it’s no wonder. These views inspired the song “American the Beautiful.” Visitors can arrive at the summit by car or via the historic Pikes Peak Cog Railway. There is parking and a visitor’s center at the top. If you happen to be around during the summer, consider watching The Race to the Clouds. This car race to the top of the mountain will leave you in awe.

4. Garden of the Gods

The Garden of the Gods is in Colorado Springs and is a breathtaking natural park. It is renowned for its towering red sandstone rock formations. Visitors can wander along one of many hiking trails or do some rock climbing.

5. Bison Herds

Colorado is home to several bison herds. And seeing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat is a memorable experience. There are multiple places to stop and admire the herds along the Front Range. But don’t approach them.

6. Colorado Trail

7. Continental Divide

The Continental Divide does just what its name suggests – divides the Americas. And you can stand right on top of it for a photo (and some majestic views) in Colorado. You can also hike along it for a firsthand thrill. The Continental Divide Trail runs for over 3,000 miles across two states.

9. Mesa Verde National Park

Famous for its well-preserved cliff dwellings, Mesa Verde National Park provides a fascinating glimpse into the ancient history of the Ancestral Puebloans. Rocky Mountain National Park covers roughly 415 square miles of the state and is a must-visit destination for nature enthusiasts. It has stunning alpine lakes, meadows adorned with wildflowers, and hikes for both beginners and more advanced thrill seekers. Its diverse wildlife includes elk, bighorn sheep, and black bears. The park sits just on the edge of Estes Park.

12. Hot Springs

14. Royal Gorge Bridge

The Royal Gorge Bridge near Cañon City is one of the highest suspension bridges globally, dramatically spanning the Royal Gorge. Visitors can walk or take a gondola ride across the bridge, relishing the breathtaking views of the Arkansas River below.

16. Palisade Peaches

Coloradans eagerly await the Palisade peach season every year. The delightful fruit grows on the Western Slope. And it floods state farmer’s markets every summer. Residents argue that they are the sweetest peaches out there.

20. Air Force Academy

Located in Colorado Springs, the United States Air Force Academy is a prestigious institution that trains future Air Force officers. The campus has unique architecture, historic planes, and a visitor center. But the highlight of a trip here is the chapel and cadet overwatch area. Visitors always leave in awe.

Colorado has an incredibly rich railroad history. The state has multiple railroad museums that preserve its locomotive heritage.
