The Princess Switch is a Netflix original film released November 16, 2018. This fun Holiday Romantic Comedy uses the same trope as The Prince and the Pauper. Before we dive into where The Princess Switch was filmed, let’s briefly discuss the film’s plot!

Within the movie are two main characters, Lady Margaret Delacourt and Stacy. The film begins with Stacy, a baker, getting invited to a prestigious baking competition in the Kingdom of Belgravia. She travels to Belgravia with her assistant, best friend, Kevin, and his young daughter.

In a twist of events, Stacy runs into Lady Margaret Delacourt, who looks the same! Surprisingly, though, they aren’t twins. The two devise a plan to switch places as Lady Margaret is getting married soon and wants freedom. During this switch, the two girls fall in love while pretending to be each other. Stacy, though, feels awkward and out of place as she’s in love with the prince and isn’t royalty. On the other hand, Margaret realizes she wants a normal life, not to be a princess or queen.

This film was so popular that it received two sequels. The trilogy’s second movie is The Princess Switch: Switched Again. It involves another character, Lady Penelope, who looks identical to Margaret and Vanessa. The third film, The Princess Switch 3: Romancing the Star, was released on November 18, 2021.

The country within the film is fake. The Kingdom of Belgravia is a fake European country within the Princess Switch universe. Although the kingdom is made up for the film, there is a Belgravia, but it has no connection to this film. Technically, Belgravia is a district/neighborhood in London.

The movie was not filmed in London, though, but in Romania. Most of the movie was shot in Carei, Romania, including the beginning of the film, where Kevin and Stacy are in ‘Chicago.’ So, what about the castle in the first film? Can you visit it? Is it real? The castle featured in the Princess Switch is the Karolyi Castle. This castle is very popular and full of history. It was built in the 14th to 15th century.

Interestingly, though, the second film in the trilogy was not filmed in Romania but in Edinburgh, Scotland. And what about the third film? The third Princess Switch movie was also shot in Scotland.
