Huge Elephant Males Act Like a Bunch of Buddy Boys as They Roll Around in the Dust

Whoever said that large animals can’t have fun and play around has never seen these massive male elephants roll around in the dirt as if they were kids in the video below. 

Have you ever seen grown men outside playing tag football or something, and then they start playing with each other like they are kids? And we laugh and chuckle because it looks funny because they are grown men. Well, we all need some fun in our lives, no matter if we are grown adults or grown elephants.

Elephant Sighting in Addo Elephant National Park

Tourists in Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa captured amazing footage of these elephants playing around. Zasendle Adventures YouTube channel shared this video. This privately owned company prides itself in offering unique private tours to tourists looking for the raw experience that Africa has to offer. Their tours include South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Mozambique.

Male Elephants Playing Around

At the start of this video, we see a couple of adult male elephants that are walking around this national park. Let’s first appreciate how large these animals are. Elephants are the largest land animals alive. They weigh upwards of 12,000 pounds and can reach 12 feet in height. And as the saying goes, the bigger you are, the harder you fall. But these giants aren’t afraid of falling.

 The big one in the back goes to his knees and starts to roll around. Looking like it’s fun, the other two elephants come to join in on the fun. These elephants know that you can never be too big to roll around and have some afternoon fun. 

Do Elephants Have Knees?

Although we saw the elephant bend down to be what looked like knees, do they have knees? The answer is yes, they do! According to the National Library of Medicine, “In elephants, the knee joint plays important roles in weight-bearing and locomotion, but anatomical data are sparse and lacking in functional analyses.” 

Mammals have four legs, and where we might assume they have four knees, this is not the case. They only have knees on their front two legs. As we can see, the elephant’s ability to bend at their knees allowed them to have the flexibility they needed to roll around and have the fun they wanted.
