The Komodo dragon, as a formidable predator, possesses a diverse and carnivorous diet. Their menu primarily consists of meat, with a preference for smaller prey such as birds, reptiles, and rodents/small mammals. However, these modern-day dinosaurs are not limited by size, as they are known to take on larger animals such as the wild boar visible in the incredible video below. Their hunting technique involves ambushing their unsuspecting victims and delivering a lethal bite.

They can reach impressive top speeds of 20km/h, surprising their prey and latching on with their sharp teeth. The Komodo dragon will then tear into the prey’s flesh with its serrated teeth, letting its venom seep inside more easily. Once the prey is subdued, the Komodo dragon tears into its meal with its serrated teeth, devouring both flesh and bones. This varied and powerful diet contributes to the dragon’s impressive ability to thrive in its natural habitat.

The future survival of the Komodo dragon is threatened by various conservation concerns that demand immediate attention. Habitat loss due to human activities, including deforestation and encroachment, is a major challenge for these ancient reptiles. Additionally, illegal poaching for the exotic pet trade poses a significant risk to their populations. Climate change and rising sea levels further exacerbate the situation, affecting their nesting grounds and food availability. To protect the Komodo dragon, concerted conservation efforts are necessary, including habitat preservation, strict anti-poaching measures, community involvement, and education initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding these iconic creatures for future generations.

Komodo dragons consume food by tearing off huge chunks of flesh while swallowing them whole and are able to swallow prey the size of goats. These larger animals generally take them a bit longer to consume, about 20 minutes, and quite often they will use an aid to help get the animal down their throats. These dragons have been known to use trees as an assist, which at times will knock the tree down due to the force used.

Komodo dragons have flexible skulls, jaws that are loosely articulated, and stomachs that are able to expand. All of these features enable them to eat larger prey and as they are known for their ability to eat large prey in one swallow, like this wild boar, it is quite normal.
