Childhood myths are some of the best memories we have from growing up. From believing in Santa Claus to the Tooth Fairy, and to believing in the beauty of unicorns. These are fond memories we will carry with us for a lifetime.
Well, what if we were to tell you that although Santa flying around in his reindeer-pulled sleigh is a myth, unicorns are not? That’s right, unicorns are real! Although they probably look a little different than what you imagined as a kid. Let’s see what they look like below.
Unicorn Deer Sighting in Minnesota
On Sunday, December 26, 2023, Chase Mortenson was hunting for deer on his uncle’s farm located in Granite Falls, Minnesota. When suddenly, he had a rare unicorn deer in his sight and he took the shot.
It was initially reported by Fox 9 News, that Mortenson at first thought that he missed the deer. “But he later found the deer about 20 yards away from his deer stand.” And we can see him in the above X, formally known as Twitter, post smiling next to the unicorn deer.
According to the Scientific American, “Researchers say the creature’s single antler, which pokes up like a cowlick from the middle of its head, maybe the result of a genetic anomaly—” Which gives it the appearance of a unicorn.
Mortenson reported that his uncle had seen this rare unicorn buck on his property before. And we guess Mortenson was just lucky enough to have been able to see and get this rare buck.
How Rare Is a Unicorn Deer?
The sighting of a unicorn deer is incredibly rare. There have been a few reports of unicorn deer in Italy, Slovenia, Georgia, and there in Minnesota. Let’s take a look at these.
- Italy – This deer was reportedly born into captivity and had a unicorn appearance. What was odd is that this deer had a twin that was completely normal and had only two antlers on his head.
- Slovenia – This deer was found with a single antler in the middle of his head. A researcher by the name of Boštjan Pokorny told the National Geographic, “In the case of this very untypical and interesting buck, both pedicles, which should be separated, grew up together in one large pedicle.”
- Georgia – This monster buck had two full-grown antlers, and then one in the middle of his head. Charity Broadwell stated it was the most unique buck she’d ever seen.
And yes, although this is not the unicorn we believed in as children, it is a rare and beautiful sight to see if you ever get the chance!
