Lions are often seen as rulers of the savanna, but what about elephants? They’re huge, intelligent, and form impressively large herds. Maybe it’s simply gusto, but the bull elephant in the video below thinks he has what it takes to stand up to a whole group of lions!

We first see that quite a lot of huntresses are feeding on what’s likely their latest kill. Then, a mid-sized elephant ambles into the scene and makes a fuss. It appears that he’s trying to rile them up, or possibly scare them off (elephants are very territorial!). These attempts at party crashing go unheard, though, as the lionesses don’t really react much. Understanding he’s not going to get his way, the intruder decides to bail before he finds out just how angry lions can get!

Which of these mighty animals truly holds the title of top African heavyweight? Stick around as we go over several facts regarding each to get a better idea of the answer.

Do Elephants Attack Lions?

The below footage definitely provides evidence that elephants have the nerves to approach lions outright. However, as herbivores, they don’t necessarily hunt lions down. Instead, they’ll either defend themselves or their territory when necessary. Lions, on the other hand, will go out of their way to attack elephants, but only if an opportunity presents itself. You see, they know to stalk young, elderly, or sickly individuals from a herd, as they’re otherwise too massive to take on. Honestly, the ruffled elephant from the clip below is lucky the lionesses were busy with something!

During any encounters that do occur between these powerhouses, elephants make excellent use of their size and brute strength. In fact, they’re more than capable of flipping opponents over, stomping on them, and using their tusks like a spear. They may be gentle giants, but they also have a formidable arsenal!

Who Is Stronger: Elephants or Lions?

It would be easy to vote for lions in this case, because they’re the apex predators of Africa, right? However, pause for a moment and consider that elephants are the largest land animals in existence, and they’re not afraid to prove it. Between sheer might and sharp wit, this is a difficult showdown to predict the outcome of. Make sure to check out the detailed answer to this puzzler here!
