See How Water Buffaloes Fend Off the Collaborative Attacks of an Entire Lion Pride

Water buffalo may appear to be somewhat similar to the domesticated cows that we are used to seeing. However, it turns out they have a fierce will and will defend themselves and their babies with steel and grit! As one video shows, these buffaloes will stop at nothing to fend off the lions trying to turn them into a meal.

In a viral video posted in the last few years, we can witness an amazing display of how a massive herd of water buffaloes faces off against an entire pride of lions in a brutal dry season. The video begins with the buffaloes converging on one of the last watering holes in the area. They hope to find a bit of refuge from the sun and get a drink of water. As it turns out, however, they are not alone. There are lions nearby, and they are expert buffalo hunters who know that this is the best time to attack them while they are distracted by the water.

As the video shows, the lions break free from the cover of brush and charge at the buffaloes. Their actions cause a stampede and massive clouds of dust to shoot into the air. The herd splits into two groups, trapping some of the lions between them. For a while, the buffaloes have the advantage and begin chasing the lions away, using their numbers and size advantage against the big cats. But the lions are not ready to give up. They regroup and block access to the water, hoping to isolate and weaken some of the buffaloes.

The standoff continues for several minutes, with both sides roaring and snorting at each other. Eventually, a lioness targets a baby buffalo and tries to drag it away. But an adult buffalo soon chases her away and comes to the rescue. The lioness lets go of the calf and runs for her life while the buffaloes reunite with their young one.

The video ends with the buffaloes; they make a triumphant return to the water hole while the lions retreat into the bushes, hungry and defeated. This is a rare example of how water buffaloes can fend off the collaborative attacks of an entire lion pride. Sometimes, the prey wins
