Different species of bear don’t always go head to head, but they’d better be prepared for when they do. In the below video, we briefly see the consequences of such a bout. Fair warning: it’s not a pretty sight. The rivals in question here are the massive grizzly bear and the smaller black bear. Keep in mind these different species are not always naturally predisposed to fight. However, significant changes in their environment, such as habitat destruction or inclement weather, can push them into aggression.

Grizzly bears very often give the impression that they’re the ones in charge, and the one in the clip below doesn’t disappoint. With such force at their disposal, is it any wonder grizzlies are effortlessly apex predators? This is a bit ironic, seeing that these giants usually prefer a largely vegetarian diet!

The American black bear is very widespread within the United States and is certainly a less aggressive critter. In the below video, it’s not even clear if the smaller critter got much of a chance to fight back! Regardless, they are still large and powerful animals, and usually only have to worry about predation from specifically grizzlies.

Both of these big beasts do share a sense of superiority and territorial behavior – obviously a bad combo. Make sure to read on to get a better picture of who’s who in the Ursidae family!

As most bears will attempt to dominate a territory they reside in, there is always the chance for conflicts. However, it’s thought to be an unusual occurrence for varying bear species to encounter each other. This is due to the distribution of each animal, as well as their population in the wild. Did you know that the farthest northern reaches of Canada and Alaska are the few places in North America where all native bear species’ habitats overlap?

What Is the Mightiest Bear?

If bets were placed for the strongest bear on Earth, the grizzly seems like a surefire winner. Let’s not forget about the grizzly’s seemingly equally matched contender, though – the polar bear. Both of these heavyweights weigh hundreds of pounds and have some of the most fierce bites on the planet. A lot of their image relies on sheer brute strength and massive physique. Could these mammoths go toe-to-toe with no clear winner?

The answer might surprise you. Recent studies of an unusual overlap in these two animals’ habitats concluded that polar bears are more likely to bail if confronted by a grizzly. That means, unless the polar bears are holding out on everyone, the title of mightiest bear goes to the vicious grizzly!
