Vermont is a state in New England, and it has one of the lowest populations of any state. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, just 643,077 people lived in this state in 2020. The state’s population is slowly rising, though. Discover the fastest-growing towns in Vermont and find out which parts of the state have increased their population between 2020 and 2022.

Lyndonville is a small community within Caledonia County. The town is very small, totaling only 467 acres of area. This town is in the northeastern part of the state, and the Passumpsic River flows to the west. A campus of Northern Vermont State University is to the west of the town across I-91.

Lyndonville is the first entry on this list of the fastest-growing towns in Vermont. The population in this town in 2020 was only 1,177 people. That means this town was not very populated to start. Then, the population rose by 31 people, reaching an estimated 1,208 individuals. This is a very small population increase, but it still represents a gain of 2.6%.

Lyndonville makes the list of the fastest-growing towns in Vermont only because the state is seeing very slow growth. Many parts of the state are losing small numbers of people, though.

5. St. Albans

St. Albans is a small city located in Franklin County. This county is in northwestern Vermont. The city is famous for the St. Albans Raid, the northernmost conflict of the Civil War. On October 19, 1864, Confederate soldiers invaded the city from Canada where they robbed local banks and shot one man before fleeing back to Canada.

The city is about 15 miles south of the border with Canada, and another 13 miles east of the border with New York. The population in St. Albans in 2020 was 6,859 people. The population in this city increased by 83 people. In 2022, the population in the city reached 6,942, an increase of 1.21%. So, St. Albans is similar to Lyndonville in that it had a very small population increase.

4. Morrisville

Morrisville is a town in Lamoille County, Vermont, an area of northern Vermont. The Lamoille River flows to the north of the town. This town was first settled in 1798, and it makes the list of the fastest-growing towns in Vermont by having a small increase of just 95 people.

Morrisville had a population of 2,165 people in 2020. However, the population in this area rose to 2,260 people over the next two years. The population growth in this town is certainly small. However, given that so few other places in the state experienced population growth, this town also gets a spot on this list. Yet, this is the last town or city that is on the list with under 100 people added to its population.

In 2020, Winooski was home to a total of 8,000 people. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated that the area was home to 8,328 people in 2022. The northernmost part of South Burlington stretches between Essex Junction and Winooski. This is the leader of the fastest-growing towns in Vermont. South Burlington has a border along Lake Champlain, a massive lake that spans between New York and Vermont. Like the last two cities we’ve mentioned on this list, this city is in Chittenden County.

South Burlington has a fairly high population. This region had 20,277 people in 2020. The population in this area continued to rise over the next few years, adding 347 residents. In 2022, the estimated population of South Burlington City was 20,624 people. That means the city grew by 1.7% over the two years.

All of these towns and cities on the list are fast-growing. However, the Green Mountain State is not growing all that much. Only about 4,000 new people moved to the state between 2020 and 2022. The population in this state will continue to be the second lowest of any state in the country for years to come, and it may never catch up to places as remote as Alaska.
