When we say koala bears, what comes to mind? Perhaps you think of a stuffed animal or even an adorable zoo exhibit where koala bears are all there being cute and cuddly. However, sometimes, even cute and cuddly can fight and be vicious. And it doesn’t always have to be in the wild, either. Sometimes, cute and cuddly can fight in captivity.

In the next video shown below, we are taken to Syndey, Australia. Some bystanders enjoying this day are passing by the koala exhibit. They stop to film when they see these koala bears start to go at it together. They offer their description of what happened in the video below.

“Koala has a very low metabolic rate and normally rests for about 16 to 18 hours a day, sleeping most of that time. As seen in this video, when disturbed, Koalas are known to be violent, their teeth and claws capable of causing considerable injury.”

Cute and Cuddly Fighting

At the start of the video posted below, we see that one of the koala bears has climbed up high. Most likely in an attempt to get away from this other koala who, for some reason, is refusing to leave him alone. We hear the adorable sounds they are both making as they fight one another. It’s kind of difficult to take a fight seriously with the sounds they are making!

If we freeze the video at 16 seconds, we see that the people filming this interaction have turned the camera. We are now able to see just how large these koala bears are! They aren’t as small as they first looked in the video at the start. Very slowly, we see the koala bear on the bottom raise his hand, spread his claws out, and strike the back of the other. This is when the fight takes on full swing. They end up climbing back down and finishing this fight down below.

Animal Facts: Koalas

Koalas are nocturnal marsupials famous for spending most of their lives asleep in trees. During the day they doze, tucked into forks or nooks in the trees, sleeping for up to 20 hours.

Koala Bears (Phascolarctos cinereus) of the family Phascolarctidae are found in south-eastern Australia. They can weigh anywhere from 8-33 pounds and also reach lengths of 24-34 inches. They have sharp claws that for sure leave marks on the trees that they climb. The Queensland Government has this to say about Koala Bear’s claws.

“Koalas have strong arms, powerful legs, and sharp claws suitable for climbing trees. They have two opposable thumbs on their fore paws, allowing them a better grip—When climbing, koalas leave behind characteristic scratches in the bark.”
