The Ben the Vet TikTok channel is maintained by veterinarian Ben Simpson-Vernon, who is based in Chigwell, England. It’s not surprising that his post from September 22 has received more than 10.9 million views as of the time of this writing.

It delves into a contentious subject affecting popular dog breeds. In his discussion on the dog breeds he would never adopt as a veterinarian, Simpson-Vernon includes some popular breeds.

Ben starts the video off with a statement that the following breeds are simply his opinion. One dog breed might be great and fitting for one person, and awful for the next. When choosing a dog for you, your lifestyle plays a major role! 

Here are the five breeds Ben says to steer clear of.

Chow Chow

Chow Chow’s are undoubtedly adorable. Generally speaking, according to Simpson-Vernon, this breed can be quite mean and entitled. Ben mentions that chow chows get lost in their own worlds and are among the most aggressive breeds at the vet.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

On the opposite end of things, Ben mentions that he adores the personality of cavalier King Charles spaniels. The reason he wouldn’t want to own this breed is because they can have a lot of health issues, which can become quite costly. 

Dachshund

According to Simpson-Vernon, dachshunds are a lovely dog breed. The reason he wouldn’t want to care for them is because they’re extremely likely to experience severe back problems. These commonly necessitate spinal surgery and include everything from discomfort to paralysis.

Shar Pei

Did you know Shar Pei fever is an ailment named after this specific dog breed? Although their wrinkly bodies can be adorable, they actually cause a lot of health problems. To prevent hairs from rubbing against their eyes, a number of them need to have their eyelids “tacked in place,” according to Simpson-Vernon. 

In addition, the young vet notes that they frequently struggle with skin conditions and there have been several occasions where Shar Pei’s attempt to bite veterinarians in the face.

Flat-Faced Breeds

Pugs, bulldogs, and French bulldogs make the list at the top spot! He mentions spine difficulties, dermatological issues, and vision issues, saying that they are vulnerable to so many illnesses. 

Due to the puppy’s head and shoulders being too big for the mother to deliver naturally, more than half of these pups require Cesarean sections. 

Surprisingly, Simpson-Vernon suggests people adopt mixed breeds or mutts.
