An age-old rivalry documented in folklore and film was brought to life in this footage. The conflict was captured in the Masai Mara National Reserve in Kenya. The rumors are true; lions and hyenas have intense territorial conflicts. This scene displayed a group of hungry hyenas feasting on a massive hippopotamus by a river bank. As you noticed, a small pride of lions was also present, looking to cash in on the big meal. Unsurprisingly, the two competing groups took exception to each other’s presence, though there seemed to be plenty of food to go around.

Once the scene unravels, the tension comes to a head. The young male lions charge the hyenas, hoping they’ll relinquish the large carcass. However, the hyenas stood firm and continued eating. That is, until the dominant male lion appears. The male strolled in calmly but assertively; his presence was enough to send the hyenas packing.

Why Are Lions and Hyenas Enemies?

Lions and hyenas have a well-documented rivalry, but why does it exist in the first place? This is because the two groups often fight over the same resources. Hyenas and lions must contend in a fiercely competitive ecological niche. Both communities are skilled hunters despite the spotted mammal’s reputation as a scavenger. While these big cats are regarded for their apex predator status, lions are known to scavenge and bully their way into an easy meal.

Hyenas and lions are calculated and opportunistic, often settling for the best option. Naturally, this leads to these carnivores feuding over the right to a kill — even if neither group was responsible for the prey’s untimely demise. Territorial disputes are common between the species as well. Lions are known to drive hyenas out of their domain, and a group of hyenas can engage in the same behavior when they outnumber their competitors. In fact, the rivalry can be so intense that the groups have been observed killing each other’s young, in a practice referred to as infanticide. You can see why the above footage was so intense. There is a lot at stake between these arch nemeses, including food and other resources, as well as legacy concerns.
