In the wild, the lion is the king of the jungle. This fierce predator weighs up to 550 pounds, has claws that reach over one inch in length and can reach up to bursts of speed of 50 miles per hour. However, every now and then the tables in the wild are turned, and the lions are the ones that are the hunted. Let’s not miss the action in the video posted above, when a herd of buffalo has had just about enough of this lion.

Lion and Buffalo Sighting

The short YouTube clip shown at the top of this blog post takes us to the continent of Africa. As the second-largest content in the world, Africa houses many of the famous wild animals that we know about. Animals such as lions, buffalo, cheetahs, leopards, crocodiles, and elephants. The Animal World YouTube page shared this video and it has already received more than 180,000 likes.

Buffalo Herd Standing Up to King of the Jungle

As the video above starts out, we see that a herd of buffalo has ganged up on this male lion. What likely happened, was this overconfident lion took his title of the king of the jungle a little too seriously. He assumed that he could rush into a herd of buffalo without any consequence as to what may happen.

Lions are able to hunt buffalo, but they do so as a pride. In some circumstances, if a buffalo is alone, a young calf, or an elderly bull a lion could single-handedly take that buffalo down by himself. According to the University of Minnesota, lions “have remarkable acceleration and are able to wrestle down powerful prey such as zebra and buffalo.”

However, as we can see from the video posted at the top, this lion stands zero chance against an entire herd of buffalos. And angry ones at that. We see them trampling on him, and flipping him up into the air. It’s only once this lion takes shelter behind a tree that he is able to be safe.

How Does Buffalo Kill Lions?

Buffaloes (Syncerus caffer) of the genus Syncerus are no mammals to mess with unless you know that you can take them down. These beasts are strong animals that have the ability to weigh up to 2,000 pounds and can reach up to six feet in length.

They are known for their powerful horns that are able to not only impale and injure but even cause death to lions. Another way that they are able to kill lions is by repeatedly stomping on them. Which we see time and time again in herds.

But, perhaps the best way for buffaloes to escape the claws of an angry lion looking for his next meal, is to stay together as a herd. The old adage of “there is power in numbers” is a powerful statement that holds true in the wild. And as we can see from the video posted above, it worked for this herd of buffalo.
