One of the tallest and most beautiful antelopes is the greater kudu. Males have impressively long, swirling horns and a beard, and they can weigh up to 700 pounds. Females occasionally have little horns but are noticeably smaller.

Kudu lifts their tails and flicks them forward when running, revealing the white base of the tail. The rest of the herd will follow in the thick shrubs after seeing this visual alarm signal of the tail.

They are able to fend off predators thanks to their huge, delicate ears and camouflage colors. When startled, they remain still and are hard to see. They have an excellent sense of hearing and are strong swimmers.

Kudu are renowned for their prowess in leaping tall fences. A seven-foot fence is simple to scale, but a ten-foot fence can be spontaneously vaulted. Under pressure, these powerful jumpers have been known to clear nearly 12 feet.

This was caught on video when visitors on a safari spotted a kudu being chased by a lioness. The three main predators of the larger kudu are lions, spotted hyenas, and African wild dogs. Because they also prey on bigger kudus, cheetahs, and leopards often hunt cows and calves instead of mature bulls.

Run For Your Life

Someone was filming the kudu as it suddenly leaps the length of an entire dirt road, jumping over a full-sized car in the process. We’ve included the incredible footage below for you to enjoy!

One of the comments on the video mentions, “With a little motivation behind him I believe he took the record for that long jump. The strength in their legs is absolutely amazing for their size and weight, to be able to jump like that.”

The greater kudu, which stands 151 to 59 inches tall and weighs an average of 567 pounds with a maximum of 694 pounds, is the second-tallest antelope after the eland. 370 pounds and 47 inches are averages for females.

Kudu are extremely evasive and exceedingly vigilant. They produce a harsh alarm bark when they sense danger, frequently using their huge, radar-like ears, and then rush away in a characteristic rocking horse gait, the male putting back his horns to escape overhead obstacles.

Kudu are often more energetic in the morning and evening, but when threatened, they turn nocturnal. Although kudu spends almost all of their time hiding under the canopy of trees in the Kalahari, they are easily missed during the hottest part of the day. They make fantastic camouflage because of their color!
