The next YouTube video posted at the top of this blog post takes us to Africa. This video was shared by the Incredible Wild Animals Sighting YouTube page. This channel shares amazing footage of animals in Africa on safari tours. We see incredible chases, hunts, and kills that take place. We also get to see the incredible beauty of the African wilderness. The Incredible Wild Animals Sighting YouTube page shares a short description of what took place below.

“The hyena is a predator that can hunt the calf buffalo and hyena strong and aggressive predator that can fight into small prey like buffalo and impala prey.”

At the start of this video, we see a mother buffalo with her calves. One of the calves is lying down. It could be this calf is sickly or is too young to be able to get up right now. The other calf is standing directly beside its mother. With every step she takes, the calf follows in her footsteps.

For one quick moment, we see the mother buffalo has turned her back to walk around. She undoubtedly needs to stretch her legs. The calf that is standing up follows her around. Abruptly, we see a hyena emerge from the tall grass and head straight for the sickly calf lying down defenseless.

The mother buffalo comes rushing back. She heads straight for the hyena, and the hyena backs off. This hyena is smart enough to know that this buffalo is too big for it to mess with. After all, the buffalo can weigh upwards of 2,000 pounds. Whereas the hyena only weighs up to 190 pounds. Talk about a significant difference in size! The mama buffalo goes over to ensure her baby calf is okay.

Although the hyena will not challenge this large mammal, it will stay as close as possible. Hyenas are known to scavenge animals, whether they are alive, sick, or dead.

According to a study on the Vilified Hyena as an Agile and Intelligent Creature, they state that “hyenas play the role of waste disposal in the habitat. By consuming dead and decaying matter, they contain disease and help recycle nutrients in their ecosystem. Chances are, there would be a lot more sickness if they weren’t around.”
