Crocodiles are not too fussy about what they eat, and here’s the proof. In this gruesome footage, we get to see what looks like a saltwater crocodile polish off a freshwater crocodile without any hesitation.

Don’t Miss This Fascinating Clip Below!

It’s a croc-eat-croc world.

What Do Saltwater Crocodiles Usually Eat?

These reptiles (also known as salties) are apex predators and can hunt prey in the water as well as on land. Younger crocodiles can only tackle insects, amphibians, crustaceans and fish. Once they are larger, however, their diet consists of other reptiles, birds and mammals. The larger and most accomplished crocodiles (usually males) will attempt attacks on much larger prey and this can include water buffalos and guars.

In some areas, their range overlaps with the Australian freshwater crocodile. Where this happens, salties are quite happy to attack and eat the smaller reptile.

How Big Are Australian Freshwater Crocodiles?

Sadly, we don’t get to see much of the Australian freshwater crocodile in this clip as it is disappearing into the salty’s mouth! However, you can just about make out the narrow snout which allows it to be identified.

But don’t be fooled into thinking that these freshwater crocs are small. Males can grow over nine feet in length and can weigh up to 160 pounds. They have plate-like scales and are a dull olive to brown-grey color. Their V-shaped snout is distinctively narrow and sets it apart from the salty which has a much broader snout. Nevertheless, it is a carnivore with 68 to 72 teeth that are on show all the time – even when it closes its mouth!

Freshwater Crocodiles are also hunters. They feed on both invertebrates and vertebrates. Therefore, their diet includes crustaceans, insects, and spiders. They also feast on fish, frogs, turtles, and snakes. Even birds and mammals are on the menu. However, the majority of their diet is made up of insects and fish. As is the case for salties, the larger the freshwater croc is, the larger the prey they will tackle.

Finally, they are also happy to join their larger croc cousins in the habit of cannibalism! The larger freshwater crocs will sometimes feed on hatchlings.
