Another year has flown by, and once again, we find ourselves coming up to another historic International Cat Day. The holiday, which began in 2002 and takes place on August 8th, is a day to honor the beloved pets and the happiness they bring us every day. You can celebrate this epic holiday in any way you want. We’d like to celebrate it by telling you about all of the amazing record-breaking feline feats that have occurred over the years.

We’ll tell you about incredible feats you won’t believe, like the longest jump, the most tricks performed in a minute, the wealthiest cat, and more. Check out this list of facts and tell your friends when you meet during your International Cat Day celebration.

The Longest Domestic Cat Ever Recorded

Domestic cats are often considered to be small, meek creatures, but the size of some cats will stun even the biggest feline fan. Case in point, our first entry on this list of record-breaking feline feats: Stewie the cat. His real name is Mymains Stewart Gilligan, and according to the Guinness Book of World Records, he was the longest domestic cat ever at 48.5 inches long, which is about as wide as a pair of French doors.

Stewie was so long that his owner had to hold him with two hands. This wasn’t a cat that could easily hide under the couch. Stewie was a Maine Coon cat that sadly passed away in 2013.

The longest currently living cat is named Barivel, and he lives with his owner in Italy. He currently measures 47 inches.

Longest Jump

Cats can leap very far when they’re scared or want to reach high platforms.

Sneak up on or otherwise scare a cat, and you’ll watch it leap, but the distance your domestic cat can go is likely nothing in comparison to the record-holder for the longest jump: 7-year-old Oscar from Dallas, Texas. Check out the video as Oscar leaps from one platform to another that is 8 feet and 5 inches away, and he does so with ease!

This amazing cat is in the Guinness Book of World Records, and it’s a record that’s unlikely to be beaten anytime soon. However, the trick wasn’t done on a whim. Oscar’s owner worked with him for over two years until he was able to jump further than most humans.

Longest Fur

Though cats can’t do much to control how long their fur will grow, it is still interesting to see how wild fur can get. To see what we mean, look at the current record holder for the domestic cat with the longest fur. The cat’s name is Sophie Smith, and her fur is nearly 10 inches long. While a cat like this is undoubtedly very fluffy, cleaning up loose fur on the couch is likely a hassle.

The former record-holder for longest fur was a cat named Colonial Meow, who also lived with her owners in California. This combination of a Himalayan and a Persian cat had fur that reached 22.87cm. Her owners, Eric and Anne Avey, said they had to brush Colonial Meow’s hair 2-3 times per week, and it was a two-person job.

Oldest Domestic Cat That Ever Lived

Next on our list of record-breaking feline feats is the domestic cat that lived the longest. That honor went to Creme Puff. Though he has since passed away, Creme Puff lived for 38 years and three days. That’s longer than many birds, reptiles, and other animals with generally longer lifespans. Creme Puff beats out the former record holder, a cat named Grandpa Rex Allen, who lived 32 years.

So far, no cat owner has come forth alleging that they have a cat that has lived longer than Creme Puff as of the time of this writing.

Wealthiest Cat of All Time

It only takes one look to realize why Nala is so adored.

Some may say that one of the things that the internet is most famous for is producing an endless string of funny cat videos and other feline-centric entertainment. As a result, many cats have become quite wealthy over time. However, none of them has more money than Nala, who has a net worth of over $100 million.

Nala started life as an abandoned kitten in a shelter. When she was adopted by her human owner, Pookie, she began showing pictures of her on Instagram. Pookie never imagined what the future would hold. Nala stood out from the pack due to her fluffy nature and expressive eyes. Soon, she also broke the record for the cat with the most followers on Instagram at 4.5 million fans. In addition to becoming a social media star, Nala also has her own food line and other brand partnerships.

Prior to Nala, the previous most famous and wealthiest cat was named Blackie from Britain. She was worth 12.5 million through no effort of her own. Instead, her wealthy owner, an antiques dealer named Ben Rea, left his entire fortune to Blackie when he died. The money that was left with Blackie was eventually split between different animal rescue charities.

World’s Fastest Cat

While there is some argument about which individual domestic cat has the record for being the fastest ever, there is a domestic feline breed that is faster than the rest, and that’s the Egyptian Mau. At any given point, the breed can run close to or over 30 miles per hour. Plus, the breed can also run and leap really high, which means it will get on your counter in no time. Other runners-up for fastest and most athletic cats include the Abyssinian and Savannah.

Of course, in the wild, the cheetah still holds the crown for fastest overall feline due to its ability to reach over 70 miles per hour in short bursts when chasing prey.

Most Tricks Performed in a Minute

Cats can perform a surprising number of tricks, but one feline outdid them all.

Cats aren’t always known for their ability to perform quick and complex tricks. Usually, that’s the dog’s category. But when properly trained, cats can be pretty amazing. The next of our record-breaking feline feats is the most tricks performed in a minute, and it was achieved by an 8-year-old cat named Alexis in Austria, who performed 26 tricks in under a minute. You can see the amazing cat perform the tricks here.

In the video, you’ll see Alexis perform a number of feats, including giving high fives, hitting targets with her nose, rolling out red carpets, weaving through her owner’s legs, and more. Her owner, Anika, always wanted to show how talented cats can be, and it seems like she did just that!

Loudest Purr

One thing cats are famous for is their ability to express their happiness by purring. Rub your cat’s belly enough and you’ll hear some pretty loud and expressive sounds, but some cats purr louder than others. While there have been numerous contenders over the years, Bella, a 14-year-old cat from the United Kingdom, holds one of the record-breaking feline feats when it comes to the loudest purr of a living cat.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Bella’s purr registered at 54.59 decibels, which is the equivalent of a kettle boiling or even a quieter washing machine. The reps from the Guinness Book heard the purr live, and then they sent the files to professional sound engineers to confirm that it was indeed the loudest. Previous record holders for loudest purr were two cats from the United Kingdom: Merlin and Smokey. The latter produced a purr that registered 67.8 decibels. Talk about a happy cat!

First Cat to Win the Blue Cross Medal

While some people may assume that all cats do all day is sleep under the table, many felines have been surprisingly brave and have even saved lives. That’s certainly the case with Jim, a 19-year-old cat from the United Kingdom. He was awarded the Blue Cross Medal for heroic actions back in 1942.

One night, when the house he lived in was on fire, Jim ran upstairs and woke up his owners. As a result, they were able to escape with their lives. When other cats may have run for their lives, Jim took decisive action and was rewarded. The Blue Cross award was created in 1897 to advocate for the welfare of domestic animals, and Jim was the first to win the award for courage.

Shortest Cat Ever

The munchkin cat is as adorable as it sounds.

We conclude our list of record-breaking feline feats with the shortest cat ever. That honor goes to a cat called Fizz Girl out of California. She’s the most recent recipient of the shortest cat award because she was only six inches tall. She’s part of a breed called Munchkins, which generally only reaches about nine inches tall at the shoulders. The breed is playful, personable, and fun to hold. It’s a common breed, so there may be owners who have cats under six inches. If you do, submit them to the Guinness Book!
