Hamsters are fun, lovable pets. If you are a new hamster owner, one of the first things that you will need is a cage suitable for their size and space needs. Many hamster owners have Syrian hamsters but their smaller counterparts, dwarf hamsters, also make great family pets. Both dwarf and Syrian hamsters can use similar habitats.

Dwarf hamsters are actually multiple species of hamsters. All are under 4 inches in length and one of the cutest little pets you can own. They are smart and love to explore and play. Dwarf hamsters also need spaces to curl up and relax. A great dwarf hamster cage can accommodate all of these needs while still keeping your dwarf hamster safe.

Some hamster species, including Syrian hamsters, are solitary. Please do your research before trying to house two or more hamsters together.

Choosing the Best: What to Look For

When considering the best hamster cage for your dwarf hamster, you should look for the right size, extra features, and interior space.

Size

Dwarf hamsters are small little pets and the spacing of the mesh bars on your cage should be smaller to make sure that they don’t escape. Most hamster cages will work for dwarf hamsters. Look for cages made for hamsters with narrow bars. The interior of tubes may also be narrower to allow them to run and explore safely.

While dwarf hamsters are small animals, that doesn’t mean that they need small cages. In fact, many of the cages that are marketed for hamsters and dwarf hamsters are too small for their physical comfort and mental health. The ideal measurements vary from expert to expert, so in this review we erred on the side of caution and ensured that all cages measured at least 39.37″ x 19.69″.

When in doubt, always provide the maximum amount of space that your home and your budget allow for all of your pets.

Extra Features

Hamsters need plenty of toys inside their habitat to keep them occupied. Many hamster cages come with a food dish and water bottle to meet their feeding needs. Exercise wheels, hidey holes, and tubes are other features that you may want to look for in a hamster cage. You can also purchase these items separately and add them to your hamster cage to create a custom habitat to suit your hamster.

Interior Space

Look for a cage that has a main habitat that is large enough to let your dwarf hamster burrow and explore. They should have room to dig tunnels in their bedding, run on a wheel, and, depending on the cage, maybe even climb ramps.
