Kittens Need a Lot of Sleep

Kittens need a lot of sleep.

Newborn animals need to spend a lot of time snoozing. When kittens are born, they are pretty much helpless and rely completely on their mother for nourishment and protection. Newborn kittens weigh between 1.8 and 5.3 ounces at birth. Their eyes are closed and their ears are folded flat. These tiny creatures cannot regulate their own body temperature and don’t even have a gag reflex. Unable to hear or see, they navigate their very limited world using their sense of smell and the sensations of warmth and cold. Sleep is very important to them, and they spend about 90 percent of their time snoozing. The remaining 10 percent is spent eating.

Human Baby Sleep Patterns

Kittens are not the only ones who need a lot of sleep. Human babies are born with all of their senses, but these are not as fine-tuned as those of an adult. At first, they have uncoordinated eye movements and can only focus at close range. They can see best at 8-10 inches in front of them, which is exactly where their mother’s face is when she is nursing them. Newborn babies sleep for between 8 and 18 hours a day in either short or long bursts. However, it is highly unlikely that they will sleep through the night.

Cuddles with Kittens

These little kittens are seeking out the baby for cuddles, creating the most adorable scene. One of the boldest kittens even nestles next to the baby’s side. It would be lovely to think that the kitten is falling in love with its tiny human companion, and that may be part of the story. However, the little kitten is also seeking the warmth and comfort that her instincts tell her will keep her safe. Sleep tight little ones!
