There is some basic grooming you can do at home with your dog. But sometimes, you need the helping hand of a pro. Whether it’s once every couple of months or you set up regular appointments, you should know what the costs of dog grooming are. Certain dog breeds require a more meticulous approach while others just need the basics. How much you end up paying depends on several factors. They include where you live, which services you request, and how much you tip (don’t forget to include that in your budget). Discover grooming prices in 2024, including the types of services and expected costs!

Dog Grooming Prices 2024: How Much You Should Expect to Pay

How much a groomer charges depends on the size of your dog. A Maltese and Great Pyrenees, for instance, are going to have different base prices. Additionally, prices depend on the condition of your pup’s coat. A thick, curly coat with matts will incur additional charges when compared to a well-brushed pup with a short coat.

Depending on the type of dog you have, you may need a full groom, which includes a cutting style. Otherwise, a more low maintenance pup could do well without the cut. When you skip a cutting style, it’s called a basic groom.

A-Z-Animals spoke with the Paws Fur Grooming Pet Salon in Holly Springs, NC. They explained that groomers may change the cost of the groom depending on various factors. Those may include the height of your dog to the length of their fur.

A full groom consists of several services packaged into one. Generally, the services for a full groom include the following:

  • bath
  • nail trim
  • paw pad shave
  • ear fur plucking
  • ear cleaning
  • anal fur shave
  • anal glands expression
  • cutting style

You can walk in with a dirty pup that has an unruly coat and by the time the groomer is done, they’re clean from head to toe, their coat is ultra-fluffy, and they’re likely sporting a colorful bandana (or dainty bow).

If you don’t already have a trusted groomer, you can find one with the help of the American Kennel Club. They offer a resource for finding groomers who participate in their S.A.F.E. Grooming Program.

Be sure to communicate well with your groomer in terms of expectations so there are no surprises. Below is a chart that gives you a basic idea of what the cost of full grooming may be for dogs of different sizes.

Dog SizeApproximate Cost
X-Small (up to 15 pounds)$52 – $60
Small (16 – 20 pounds)$60 – $70
Medium (21 – 40 pounds)$70 – $80
Large (41 – 60 pounds)$80 – $90
X-Large (61 pounds to 90 pounds)$90 – $100
Giant (91+ pounds)$100+

Dog Grooming Services and Expected Costs

When you select a packaged service, you know what you’re getting and can discuss any extras with your groomer. In some cases, you may just want to get services à la carte, and for those, there will be a specific cost. Keep in mind these are average costs and they will vary depending on your location and type of dog. A nail trim is a simple service that uses a nail clipper. Dremel also reduces the length of your pup’s nails but with a grinding tool.

A professional groomer can help keep your pup looking spiffy. Although you can groom dogs at home, when you have a trusted groomer, you save the time and energy it takes to get through a full groom.

You can request de-shedding on top of a basic or full groom or teeth cleaning to keep your pup’s chompers in good health. You could also take advantage of other services while your dog is at the groomer’s like a flea dose, a shampoo upgrade, or a facial. When working with a pup that hasn’t been groomed, matts may be present. In those cases, an extra charge is added to the cost of the groom, which ranges depending on the severity of the matting.

Dog Grooming ServiceApproximate Cost
Nail Trim$12
Dremel$15
De-Shedding$15 – $25
Teeth Cleaning$15
Flea Dose$15
Anal Glands (only)$12
Shampoo Upgrade$8
Matting$10 – $15+
Facial$8

Dog Grooming Discounts

Many groomers offer discounts that you can take advantage of. For example, some locations offer a re-booking discount (typically between 10% and 20%), which is applicable when you make your next appointment six to eight weeks ahead of time after your first service.

You can also ask about referral incentives. In some cases, you can get a percentage off your next groom when you send someone you know to your groomer. Each groomer operates differently, so be sure to ask what discounts you may be eligible for to get the most out of your visit.
