The 11 Scents That Repel Carpet Beetles

While some bugs are universally adored, others are seen as complete and utter pests. Among them are carpet beetles, who are famous for infiltrating homes and public spaces alike and damaging the items within. Luckily, several methods have proven successful in repelling these tiny insects. Let’s explore eleven scents you can add to your home that will be sure to repel carpet beetles and keep them far away.

1. Peppermint

Peppermint essential oil mixed with water can be sprayed over clothes and furniture to repel carpet beetles.

Many insects are sensitive to the smell of peppermint, which is why this herb is used in a variety of insect repellents. Peppermint is easily accessible, effective, and fragrant.

2. Clove

Carpet beetles can’t stand the scent of cloves, and keeping them in your home is a surefire way to drive these insects away.

3. Lavender

The scent of lavender is relaxing and aromatic, and people across the globe believe its fragrance lessens feelings of stress and anxiety. Luckily, it’s also an effective carpet beetle repellent.

Christmas doesn’t have to be the only time during the year that homes across the world smell like pine needles. In fact, mixing pine essential oil with water and spraying it throughout your house will drive away carpet beetles with little effort.

5. Eucalyptus

Many people hang eucalyptus leaves in their showers to promote relaxation. However, carpet beetles hate this scent just as much as humans love it. This makes it a powerful repellent.

Nearly everyone can agree that the smell of rubbing alcohol can be overpowering. If humans are sensitive to this fragrance, you can only imagine what it does to insects. Clean the surfaces in your house with rubbing alcohol where you frequently find carpet beetles and they’ll disappear quickly.

7. Vinegar

Much like peppermint, vinegar has been a popular component in insect repellents for years. Carpet beetles can’t stand the smell of vinegar, so try adding a few drops to your essential oil and water mixtures for an extra kick.

8. Woodruff

Some people report that woodruff smells like cinnamon, vanilla, or fresh-cut grass.

Woodruff is a plant with a variety of practical purposes. According to the University of Iowa, “The flowering tops and aerial parts are traditionally used to treat circulation and venous disorders, jaundice, hemorrhoids and nervous agitation and the crushed leaves have been topically used to reduce swelling and accelerate wound healing.”

9. Citrus

Citrus is natural which makes it an excellent pet-safe insect repellent.

Many insects dislike the smell of strong citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, and oranges. Luckily, many people find these fragrances pleasant which is a win-win when fighting off carpet beetles.

10. Neem Oil

Also sometimes called “margosa oil,” neem oil is a classic, natural insecticide. Many people spray neem oil and water on their plants to prevent pest insects from damaging them, but it also works as an effective carpet beetle repellent in the home as well.

11. Citronella Oil

Another powerful insect repellent that has been used as a natural form of pest control for years is citronella. If you combine a few drops of citronella essential oil with water and vinegar and spray doorways, windows, and other openings of your home, carpet beetles won’t step foot inside!
