Spiny Bush Viper Overview

Spiny bush vipers belong to the Viperidae family, and more specifically, the Atheris genus. They are closely related to other vipers, such as pit vipers and rattlesnakes. Like many vipers, spiny bush vipers have long, hinged fangs that inject venom into their prey and fold back when not in use.

Spiny bush vipers are found in sub-Saharan Africa, within tropical forests, specifically in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Tanzania, and Uganda. These habitats are categorized by their hot and humid climates with lots of rainfall. Tropical forests are a perfect habitat for spiny bush vipers because they are excellent climbers and primarily hunt from trees. They are also nocturnal creatures, meaning they spend their days resting in the heat and their nights hunting for prey.

Spiny Bush Viper Scales

Spiny bush vipers’ scales are fascinating and oddly satisfying to look at. These vipers have what is called keeled scales, or scales that are rough rather than smooth. Keeled scales have ridges that run down them, creating separation between them. Rather than lying flat against the skin, spiny bush vipers’ scales curve outwards to give them even more texture. This improves movement and traction used when climbing trees and escaping potential predators.

Similar to other vipers, spiny bush vipers’ venom can be extremely dangerous to humans. It’s considered cytotoxic, which means it can cause tissue damage, internal bleeding, and severe swelling and pain. The effects of their venom depend on multiple factors, such as the location of the bite, the amount of venom injected, and even altitude levels. It is wise to say that humans should avoid these snakes at all cost, no matter how unique and beautiful their scales may be.
