Here is a fun challenge for anyone to try, but it might be more difficult than you think. This video challenges you to find a lion sitting in dry grasslands, but you only have 60 seconds. Lions are excellent hunters, and one of their best abilities is to sneak up on prey. While lions are one of the largest cats this video shows how hidden they can become in the right setting.

While watching the video you may wonder if there really is a lion sitting in the grass. Take the challenge and see if you are able to spot this large cat within just 60 seconds.

Lions And Their Coats

A lion’s coat is one of the main reasons they are so difficult to spot when in tall grass. Unlike other cats like cheetahs, or jaguars which have spots, lions are plainly colored. The spots on these other cats work well as camouflage, but the lion’s simple coloring helps them blend in just as well.

The solid light brown coloring of a lion’s body helps them blend in perfectly with the dry grasslands abundant in the savannahs of Africa. Even though lions have the title of “King of the Jungle” they do not actually live in them. Scrublands, grasslands, rocky areas, and savannahs are the habitats where lions live in Africa. Being stealthy is not really needed for most lions often, but their coats work wonders in helping them stay hidden when needed.

Lions And Stealth

When hunting lions use tall grass to hide and sneak up on their prey until they are close enough to pounce. Hiding helps lions sneak up on animals like zebras, gazelles, buffaloes, leopards, and others that live near them. Due to their size, ferocity, and the large groups they live in lions are and they are top predators. A pride of lions holds up to 40 members, and the hunting is done mostly by the females of the group. If hunting alone or in a group, lions can be just as stealthy as other cats when they need to be.

Lions sleep up to 21 hours each day, and most of their hunting is done at night which further helps them hide. The video shows a lion hiding in plain sight during a bright day, so imagine how hidden these cats become at night. Lions hunt both day, and night, managing to sneak up on prey no matter the time of day.
