India is the most populous country in the entire world with a whopping 1.4 billion people. India’s capital is New Delhi and is located in Southeast Asia. Because of India’s size, its geography and climates, as well as its topography vary from region to region. India has a mountainous area in the north with colder climates, however, in the south, it’s more plain and tropical, which means that the weather can get hot.

Because India is such a big country, it borders seven nations. Let’s take a look at the seven countries that border India in 2024.

Afghanistan

Located in the Middle East, Afghanistan borders India in the northwest. Afghanistan is mostly a mountainous country with several rivers passing through it. The nation’s climate is continental in the mountainous regions, but in the southern part, it can get arid. The border that Afghanistan and India share is disputed. It’s only 66 miles (106 kilometers) but India claims the Kashmir region as theirs and thus recognizes the border with Afghanistan. Currently, though, the Kashmir region is part of a territorial dispute between India, Pakistan, and China.

Bangladesh

Located in South Asia, Bangladesh is a large country that shares a border with India in the northeast. Bangladesh has one of the largest mangrove forests in the world and is a diverse country geographically and climatically. There is no territorial dispute between India and Bangladesh, as they have recently settled their dispute with an agreement signed in 2015.

Bhutan

Located in South Asia, Bhutan is a tiny country that borders India to the northeast. The country has a population of 800,000 and its capital is Thimpu. The country is extremely mountainous with climates that range from extremely cold to subtropical. The border between Bhutan and India is free and open, unlike India’s other neighbors, with no conflicts or disputes.

China

With a population of 1.4 billion, China is one of the most influential world powers. China is a vast country, which means that it has several climates including subtropical, mountains, and semiarid. Currently, China is controlled by a communist government that has dominated the country since the 1940s. China and India have several territorial disputes, like the one in Kashmir that India shares with Pakistan, but they mainly share a border in the northwestern part of India where Tibet is.

Myanmar (Burma)

With a population of 57 million, Myanmar, which is also called Burma, is located on India’s eastern border near Bangladesh. Myanmar is a diverse country topographically with valleys and lowlands in the southern part of the country. It has a tropical and monsoon-type climate. Sharing a border of 1,021 miles (1,643 kilometers), India and Myanmar currently do not have any border disputes. The border is enforced by the Indian Army and the Assam Rifles of Myanmar.

Located to the north of India, Nepal is a very mountainous country that has planes and forested areas weaved throughout. Climatically, Nepal has a range of climates including subtropical, temperate, and even arctic temperatures. Nepal in India has two border disputes — the Kalapani and the Susta territories — however, the border they have is open and free.

India and Pakistan share a 2,060-mile (3,310-kilometer) border and are in constant dispute. Their relations have been historically shaky.
